Instructor here.
Some people are entirely hopeless due to not being in the game mentally. They have convinced themselves they can't do it, and as a result, they can't because they don't actually genuinely try. These are usually people that were dragged along by someone else. They are usually women as well (75% of the time). Some have convinced themselves that pulling back the slide is too hard, regardless of all the technique and tricks you try to teach them. A 6 year old can rack it, I'm pretty sure they can too, as long as they set their minds to it.
Hell, the only shooter which I've taught how to shoot who really couldn't do all manipulations was physically handicapped. And still he had a hoot regardless.
This is by no means a diss against women btw. Whenever I teach a couple to shoot simultaneously, 2 times out of 3 the woman will outshoot the man by the end of the first session. By a fairly great margin I might add.
This is mostly due to women actually paying attention to what you're saying and accepting corrections. Men often have a "I already know this"-attitude which is seriously detrimental to the speed of learning.
Contrary to the stereotype, women also frequently prefer hard recoiling pistols & revolvers. Especially magnum revolvers. During one shooting initiation, a 65 year old granny just couldn't get enough of a .44Mag.
That just goes to show how diverse our shooting community is.
