My dad died a few years back, and he left me this. It's been locked away this whole time but I feel like it's time to try it out; I just can't identify it. Does anyone here recognixe it? All I know is that it's an italian replica chambered in .44

Weird I have no idea why that posted upside down, pictures taken on my phone usually do that though. Lemme try reversing this one

Sorry for the blurry photo, it says 'Engaged in 16 May 1843'

Another, other side of the cylinder.

1860. It's a round barrel.

Thanks folks. Now to get it fixed and try firing it

w-what
>>
>>29482980

What do you need to fix?

I very vaguely remember my dad telling me something about the hammer not striking the primer or something like that
>>
>>29483042

Well here is an option. You can get what is called a Kirst Konverter (sp?) that gives you a new/different firing pin ring, and then a cylinder that allows you to stuff 45 schofield or 45 colt (only flat nosed ones though).

Why do people put pencils in shit through the trigger guard like this?
>>
>>29483067
I'll check that out, thank you.

>>29483106
I do it to hold it at an angle so it's easier to take a picture of

>>29483164
if you do that only use cowboy leads and research there proper use fire the wrong ammo and good bye revolver
>>
>>29483067
Or just get a new hammer. I'd test it before I did anything.

The gun was likely dry fired flattening the nipples so that they won't fire the percussion caps. They can be replaced. You'll need replacement nipples from Pietta and a nipple wrench.

Basics of black powder shooting. Only use black powder or a black powder substitute like Triple Seven. Pistols (including revolvers) use FFFG grade powder. Your gun is made of modern steel, so overloading it to make it blow up is basically impossible with black powder. When loading, you do need to leave enough room for the bullet.. Black powder needs to be packed tight to fire, so using the loading lever on the gun a minimum load is about 20 grains. With a round ball, an 1860 Army can handle as much as 33 grains of powder.

Bullets for a .44 cap and ball revolver are either .451 or .454. This is to ensure a tight seal when they are loaded. when loading, first load you your powder using a powder measure. then place a lubricated wad above the powder, These are cheap felt wads soaked in a lubricant. They reduce fouling and also seal the powder and help prevent chain fires where all the loaded chambers fire at once. Finally, ram the bullets home into the chambers. after doing this, place the caps on the nipples.

One last thing. Never use petroleum based oils on a black powder gun. The black powder fouling will combine with traditional gun oil and create a tar that is damned near impossible to get off the gun. Claen your gun using hot water and soap and oil it using cooking oil of some kind. Pietta guns are shipped in olive oil.

the gun is a replica of a Colt 1860 Army.

"engaged 16 May 1843" is a reference to the battle of Campeche (on the 16th of May 1843) in which Texas navy defeated Mexican navy.

Since Samuel Cold was kind of indebted to Texas for saving his company, the engraving was a gesture of appreciation (and also proof of being a genuine Colt, since roll-engraving was a fairly high-tech process).

Originally, the engraving was put on the cylinder of the 1851 Navy model (it was Colt's idea that .36 revolvers would be the navy model, and .44 caliber would be the army model, but the .44 colt dragoon available in 1850 was big and heavy, so soldiers prefered the .36 Navy).
Yours is made either by Uberti, or Pietta (i'm guessing, since those are the 2 most popular italian repro makers).

Check out vids on youtube for "shooting the colt 1860 army".

well a 58 remmy does have a different hammer than a 1860 colt. Having recently been caught with the BP bug myself I have a 1851 navy - I plan on getting a 58 (or 63) remington at some point, but IMO the '51 nevy is the sexiest gun ever, so I chose that as my first cap 'n ball. Pic related.
