Do you guys shoot outside of designated gun ranges?
Sometimes. In Oregon BLM land and state forests are open to shooting with a few provisions.
I used to with my friend. But now it's ranges only.
To me going out onto a piece of land and just shooting how you like, mindful of safety of course, will always be how shooting is supposed to be done.

It's the only way I shoot. However when I have to zero in based on pace count I don't like that as much. At least ranges are premeasured. Solution is to use a lazer range finder, but I don't own one I use my buddies.

I've never been to a range because I live with my parents who own land.
It's going to suck once I move out, though.
One of the best ranges I've been to was in Fairbanks, AK. It was a cross between an orderly range and a middle-of-nowhere gravel pit where you can shoot TVs. Only went a couple of times but it was fun. There was a great sign there too. Said something like "Closed 8-10 am Mondays(or whatever day, it's been a while)-for cleaning" otherwise it was open most of the time, for the summer anyway. Heard a story that someone brought old furniture and set up a layout of a living room before unloading on it, another time witnessed a slav in full track gear with an AK that was "from the black market", good times.
I've never shot at a designated range.

In Pennsylvania we have a lot of state game lands. From what I understand is that I can go and pick an area with a good backstop to go shoot stuff at respectively so long as it isn't during aa hunting season.

BLM and national grasslands you can shoot recreationaly on. just google "yourstate public lands" and check the allowed activities.
google maps shows public land shaded in green and sometimes has links to the websites for those lands, if not it will tell you what they are called so you know who's site to check (BLM or national forest service or whatever).

Yeah it is legal, I used to do it all the time when I lived in Bloomington. You're not allowed to shoot in the Charles C Deam though and shooting at live trees is illegal. I just picked a secluded spot away from where people might be hiking and never had a problem.

We had a farm with a private shooting range on it.
I started off with a BB gun, then once my dad imparted on me that it wasn't a toy, I was allowed a pellet gun and encouraged to shoot squirrels.
Shoulda seen my moms face when I called her to the backyard and shot a chipmunk in the heart.
But yeah, being in the middle of the woods where theres no chance of riccochets or dumb asses committing suicide on the range is the best way to go.

I believe for state game lands it can't be during a hunting season and you may have to follow DNR rules for what you can shoot with. I don't think you can do it in State Forests at all outside designated ranges.

There is literally miles of off road trails and flats with dozens of burnt out masses of rust just like in your pic. Outside of most towns in alaska.
No places really recycle cars and such up here and would cost more to ship to the lower 48 than you'd make back in scrap. So to the flats for some final entertainment value they go.
Mind you these are recreation lands where this behavior is acceptable. There's more than enough granola land and parks if you want to nature hike.
