My dad wants a semi automatic rifle, but hes in his 60s and stuck in his ways. He's not a "fudd", he is all for people owning baby killing salt weapons, but he just personally doesn't like the way ARs or AKs feel in his hands. Im an AKM guy myself, own an AR, and 2 battle rifles. So im thinking of getting him a mini 30 for Fathers Day. Can any /k/ommandos talk me out of it or suggest a superior "old school" style semi auto intermediate caliber rifle?
>>
If it's a ranch gun a Mini-14?
>>
i mean you can save yourself the pain in the ass that is the M1 platform and half the money by buying an SKS
>>
Buy him an m1 garand or m1a.
>>
i would say area scr lower but that maybe too modern for him still.
>>
ares scr
now you have both the AR and the fuddblaster

Get an FNAR, and put BAR wood furniture on it.
>>
SKS, if it's too short buy him one of those slip on butt pads
>>
>>29474005

Mini 14 wood stock, with an accu-strut if you buy into their marketing.

Its intended purpose would be a SHTF rifle (as cringe worthy as that acronym is)

>>29474053
He has arthritis. Stripper clips are a no-go.

>>29474061
He has a CMP M1 garand, but he hardly ever shoots it. I borrow it and shoot it more than he does. Its more of a collectors piece for him. He wants a combat rifle for when Obamas commie secret police come.

>>29474005

sks if you're cheap.

maybe a sig could work
>>
>>29474005

You're making the correct choice.

You have the right idea, but I'd get the Mini-14 just because .223 is cheaper these day.

If that isn't a consideration, then fuckit. Also, get some kind of mag-loading gizmo so he doesn't have trouble loading the mags.
>>
>>29474005
for what purpose is the rifle intended? Home defense? Varmint? Dur? Moose? Elephant? What does he need it for?
>>
>>29474175
>get the Mini-14 just because .223 is cheaper these day.
true that.
also for a SHTF weapon 7.62 will be even scarcer to borrow or scavenge.
US/NATO forces will be using 5.56. if the ruskies get involved it will be 5.45.

Buy 2, store separately in case one gets broken or stolen.

From experience the upLuLa pistol mag loader is great.

If money is no object, M1A Scout. Maybe get your dad to try holding it first, as it's a significant investment. I've been extremely pleased with mine (pic unrelated, from Google Images).

>>29474085
anon do you have an fnar? I have been thinking of getting one eventually just haven't really done any research. Any thing bad off the top of of your head about the rifle?

Build him a Fallout: New Vegas M16A1

2nding this

.223/5.56 is a more prevalent round, plus any 7/39 rounds you get for cheap will be corrosive as fuck
>>
>>29475626
mini 30 is not chrome lined I think. Corosive rounds will eat it up. AFAIK most ak's are chrome lined and protect against corrosion.
>>
>>29474005
Mini-14 or Mini-30 work well, just make sure to buy a new one, also, make sure the serial number starts with 580 or higher, the old ones have bad accuracy with any remotely fast shooting, and they get warm faster.

20rd mags carry a lot of power while still looking fudd enough, though 30rd mags work great too.
Note that factory mags work the best, and Ruger makes no factory 30 rounder, you'll either use their 20rd mags, or be looking at the ProMag 30 rounders. Optionally, you could jungle tape two 20 rounders like he's in Nam'

Finally, a Mini-30 will not reliably fire cheap steelcase out of the box, you have to polish the bolt-face to make it level (the firing pin hole slightly protrudes, and this is enough to give you light primer strikes on Tula and Wolf)

A Mini-14 will happily eat any ammo you feed it

>>29474061
Garand is heavy and has low capacity.

>>29474094
Don't need a strut with a modern Mini, as the barrel doesn't flex.

>>29474098
Then the Mini is a good choice.
If he wants a lighter rifle, get a plastic stock.
>>
>>29474175
This is good for an old timer, and I agree that .223 would be the most practical in the long run.

>>29474367
Ares SCR, it has a curved buffer in the grip, and a tilting tail on the bolt-carrier.
It will take any regular .223 bolt in it's modified carrier, as well as .300 and .458 bolts, the lower will accept any regular AR-15 upper, and accept any regular AR/NATO mags.
This allows you to have an AR with readily detachable mags in AWB jurisdictions. An SCR with a 20" barrel, two wedged/taped together 10 rounders would be a pretty good weapon in Cali, 10+10+1 with fast reloading (15+15+1 in Colorado).

The SCR is legal in all 50 states and this isn't likely to change any time soon.
>>
>>29475597
I recall hearing they're kinda heavy.

>>29475720
>Corosive rounds will eat it up
Only if you don't clean it after shooting, but it is a thing to consider.
Yugo SKSs aren't chromed and they're fine if kept clean.
>>
>>29477202
I should correct myself, Ruger makes no 30 rounders for the Mini-30, but they DO make them for the Mini-14
>>
>>29474005
You could get him a sporter style ak.
>>
>>29475626
>Year 1943+73
>S T I L L parroting that cheap 7.62x39 is corrosive
In the US the only easily available corrosive ammo is Yugo surplus. E V E R Y commercial loading, be it fancy US made hunting loads or cheap Eastern European steel case, is non corrosive and it has been that way for a very long time.

If OP were Canadian then yeah it'd be a valid point because Canadians have access to much more surplus ammo, but OP clearly states he owns an AR and that his dad owns a CMP Garand so he obviously isn't Canadian.

There's plenty of choices besides milshit, I don't understand why everyone is so stuck on it.

Do some research and come back when you've narrowed it down to a few choices.

fuck off my grandma made it.
