If you've got electronic ear pro though it's awesome. You can wear it all the time and doesn't affect your hearing, it also carries all your radio traffic.
I use these while shooting.
Yellow side would have a hole that you would face forward so that you can hear, and would block out certain decibels at times like shooting.
Green side would be for continuous loud noises, like working around loud machines.
It seems EEEEEEEEE will effect your hearing ability to hear in combat more than plugs. I seriously don't understand why everyone doesn't wear plugs.

usually, unless you're on a patrol. They either use noise cancelling headset or just dont at all. I know a lot of reconnaissance soldiers who have shitty hearing because they've gone in contact without hearing protection.
a bit of a small story. A friend of mine was top cover with an M2 browning, had earplugs hanging around his neck. Went in contact and realize the earplugs had fallen into the car, he just had to shoot back. His hearing is total shit now, he also has PTSD which is kinda sad.

The military used to be really nonchalant about ear protection. Until all these soldiers started getting out and getting a shitload of disability for hearing loss.
Now they are really hard ass about ear pro. Most places SOP includes a container with ear pro hanging off the right side belt loop of your ACU pants.
With more modern ear pro you don't even need electronic stuff (though that is best) there are ear pro with a little membrane that high intensity noises actually closes. With these in things are a little dulled but voice commands still come through just fine. Also, you can make them sort of ride on the outskirts of your ear canal so you can hear normally then just push them in real quick.

the truth is, the military is/are amongst the slowest offices in the world to really upgrade their gear.
Luckily, the overall attitude towards self-purchased gear has become much more tolerant in the past decade, so as long as you don't stick out like a sore thumb from the line, you can usually improve your military life significantly. Shit like plate carriers and camelbacks would've gotten you into big trouble in late 90s/early 00s if the higher ups found out, but now all that's basic, issued stuff.

there are "active" ear pro designs that work quite well; there's a pair of microphones that pick up pretty much the whole range of human ear, then tone down the louder sounds (shots, explosions etc.) & amplify the weaker sounds (naturally there's volume control), some designs can also be paired with a radio.
