OK, we have this thread, like daily. Here is why we need Marines.
The coast is the location of most of the most important cities and ports (obviously) in the world. You NEED to capture ports to get the logistics a large military needs. ESPECIALLY the US military. We are across an ocean, to ever get things to trucks or trains or whatever we need to get it out of the fucking ocean. Also, if you can capture the ports of a country you can strangle it.
Every country in the world knows this, coastal defenses are fierce around ports. You need to be able to silence coastal defenses and capture ports. However, a ship can't do that. They need infantry. The infantry trained for coastal warfare is the Marines.
Now, why not just cut the Marines and make more Army units and rename them like the "Waterborne Infantry" or something? First, that wouldn't make anything any cheaper or smaller, you cut one branch and make another larger. Thats stupid. Second you might run into something like in WW2 where you had something like Market-Garden where vast numbers of troops were re routed from other commanders just so the Airborne could waggle its cock. What if the next Army commander in the next big war says "hey, we need more guys, what about the Waterborne?" The Navy would say "hey, fuck off we need those for our ships" and the Army commander would say "thats weird, they are Army soldiers, I'm taking them!" Obviously the Navy wouldn't want to be cucked at all times by Army commanders.
So why don't we just fold the Marines into the Navy proper? Well what happens when the next Admiral thinks "we need more ships, less infantry!! I came up on ships, ships are the best and infantry sucks!!"
We the American people obviously don't want that. We need a combined force that can capture and hold coastal areas. Having another branch, with maritime infantry as its focus, with its own command structure to advocate for them is the best strategy for America.

Not it's not. You eliminated thousands of support jobs that exist only to support the USMC. You eliminate their thousands of uniform requirements, bases, etc. You could easily reduce the size of the "waterborne infantry" or whatever you wanna call it to something the size of a few regiments at best. There's a lot of reasons they're still around, but the biggest is that you can't dismantle something that's been apart of the U.S. military that long without ungodly amount of red-tape. Red-tape coupled with veterans attachment to them ensures their future. An armored ship is a sitting duck for anti-ship assets, especially submarines but truck mounted AShMs are also a thing.
So, enjoy spending a few months on ASW and minesweeping so the LHD so you probably won't eat 21" torpedo while sitting around the coast or hit a mine.
Relatively light anti-tank missiles are sufficient to disable landing craft, to say nothing of actual AShMs like even a short-ranged Gabriel. So, there are good odds that your tank will never actually reach the shore.

LAVs are vulnerable to any anti-tank missile, as well as most autocannons and the AP rounds of several HMGs.
Armored ships do not have the armor to withstand anti-tank missiles. However, these missiles could still cripple the landing craft. If one bumps things further, beyond TOWs and the like to a Hellfire or even something like a Gabriel, these small craft will certainly be disabled.
Naturally, shore-based guns could also fire on these approaching vessels and disable if not suppressed.

Between modifying the tanks to handle 2-3 m of water, and an extendable "bridge" at the front of the ship. I think draft wouldn't be a problem.
It is not about assaulting defended beaches, its that if its worth landing there, then there will be some form of defense.
After that, if you are invading, you need to get your forces ashore asap, so you can assault a port/harbor nearby.
Assuming you aren't just directly landing at one, like inchon.

The Army has a lot of Esprit de Corps within certain UNITS but the Army as a whole does not have as cohesive an ethos as the Marine Corps. That ethos would be a 'meme' if it didn't mean anything but only one Marine Corps unit has ever surrendered and that was under the order of an Army general.
The Marines have a Hymn, the Army has a song. You EARN the title Marine. Even if it is a check in the box, the hardest entry level training in the world really does make a difference in the ideology. A Marine is "Thoroughly Indoctrinated in love of Corps and Country" while an Amy Drill Sergeant insists "that each soldier meets and maintains the army standard of military bearing and courtesy" It's just an entirely different set of core values. And the bond that a Marine shares with another Marine, regardless of MOS is much stronger than that of two soldiers of different occupation.
