To those in the know, what is a cheap and easy kit to make? Things look so cheap, but then you realize that that the only in stock repair section / semi auto receiver is like $300

If you go with a screw build, AK builds can be done without much in the way of equipment.
Sumois (and other sub guns) are absolutely terrible for beginner builds. Too much stuff needs to be fucked with to get them working but more importantly to get them legal

I'd love to build a semi-auto Suomi, but I don't even know where to begin. How do you go about fixing the receiver or making it fire on a closed bolt in semi-auto? Is the barrel length an issue or do you have to file a form 1 for a SBR?

It basically requires that you machine a new bolt. Thats the long and short of it.
As for the barrel, you either need to fill out the form, or weld an extension onto it

If you have a mill, it's pretty easy to make open bolts striker fired
You just have to make it so the reciever can accept the full auto bolt

welding an extension on the barrel is an awful idea. You buy a 16" barrel and a second shroud. Weld the shrouds together to cover the full rifle barrel.
