God that's the worst, nexus is full to the brim with it.
It would be great if they made an effort to make it lore-friendly, like have the default combat armor with some mag pouches over top, but its always pristine condor vests, skull balaclavas and Geissele rails.
This is the universe where plastic was rare as fuck even before the oil got used up by the 2050s, hence the prevalence of saturnite and composites everywhere in its place. They didn't develop the same way we did, they skipped flak jackets entirely for hard plates and rails were only in experimental use with a single airborne unit by the time of the great war.

It lost that gritty practicality it had and now has this generic Marvel-Comics-esque look that is just so weighed down by all of the varpor-ware and nonfunctional greebeling. It hurts, and it is over all much weaker and much less striking. It all looks like concept art. Whereas the other gear looked like reality.

I agree with you on the marines and ODSTs, they fucked them up real bad in Halo 4 and 5 (4 wasn't so bad, because at least the special forces marines looked like the old ones) and you're definitely right about the ODSTs. For the most part, the armours were pretty shitty as far as Halo armours go(Save for a select few I.E. Soldier chestplate and Air Assault), as well as the vehicle designs, like the transport pelican (I'll admit I like the H4 Warthog, Scorpion, Mongoose, and Broadsword. The double cockpit look ONLY works for the Gunship pelican.), but it seems like the designers just wanted TOO MUCH change in the designs. Even Bravo343(A representative on Reddit) Admitted a Fan's helmet design looked better than 99% of the other helmets in game.
That being said, while Halo 5's gameplay is a departure from the rest of the series(even 4), it's still a really solid game.
Another thing I'd like to mention is that the design and animations on the UNSC weapons in Halo 5 are possibly the best in the series, realism-wise (Especially the handgun). The only other Halo game with really realistic animations was Halo: CE. (I'll admit H5's rocket launcher is kinda shitty as a replacement for the old one, but on it's own it's OK. At least they added the older one, too.)
