UKfag here, is it ok if I join the army purely out of having no other option? If so what should I sign up to do?
>>
>>29465937
yes
fusiliers
>>
>>29465937
Earn your guts, boy. Join the Infantry. Try the Green Jackets.
>>
>>29465948

I'm Scottish so was thinking Scots guards or royal regiment of Scotland. Or try and go for the Royal Marines.
>>
>>29465988
>try and
Learn to speak English first, humdinger.
>>
>>29465937

Yeah, but don't tell the recruiter that.

And do you want skills when you leave or do you want career?
>>
>>29465937
Blackwatch
>>
>>29466128

That is proper English

>>29466143
I want to learn some operating skills and experience the army, maybe travel a bit and do the occasional cool exercise once or twice a year. Also would like to use it as a springboard to do other things in life, right now I'm a bum.
>>
>>29466191

Any kinda trade you want?
>>
>>29465937
Yes. Try to do something related to something that will give you skill when you leave.
>repair of things
>IT related stuff

Don't listen to anyone telling you to go in seeking some good old Imperialism. You will just leave as a generally fit vegetable incapable of doing anything other than serve.
>>
>>29465988
The Scot Dragoon Guards have a cool looking new role. Have you considerd jobs outside of the infantry?
>>
>>29466191
Are you smart? The Int Corp have a lot if opportunity. Can set you up properly after well too.
>>
>>29466191
>...try to... not try and.

I feel like a grammar school educator.
>>
>>29466319

Not him, but I've been told if you want an Int role, you should pick the RAF.

They are supposed to be more "pragmatic" about things.
>>
>>29465937
>>29466191
Go into a corp where you'll get decent skills. RE, REME and the like.

Going infantry is a real specialism in killing, so I wouldn't recommend it for civvy street.

>>29466363
That sounds kind of bullshitty.

>>29466319
Being street wise and quick on your feet is probably more advantageous than raw brain power in the int corps. All of the int corps folks I've met seemed fluent and quick, but not remarkably clever or anything. You'll find cleverer people in the RAMC or RE, really.
>>
>>29466191
>I want to learn some operating skills and experience the army,
Not going to find that in the regular army unless you are a lifer.

Like
>>29466386
Suggestion: become a bouncer for a few years and if you like being always vigilant and dealing with scum and slag take some exec protection classes and move up.
>>
>>29466386
>not remarkably clever
That sums it up, sir.
>>
>>29466363
Nah that's bollocks. Army Int corp is bigger, has more specialties and considerably more experiance. The RAF is like the USMC, very good at pr.
>>
>>29465975

Green jackets don't exist anymore you twat, they got merged with the Rifles years ago.
>>
>>29465937
>Be a tanky
>Be an officer tanky
>Be all toasty and warm in the heated tank and have fresh pots of tea throughout FTXs
>Also have access to a massive charity fund that must be spent every year or else it'll go, so you can use it to fund private holidays for yourself

It's a breddy good life tbqh
>>
>>29466412
>Not going to find that in the regular army unless you are a lifer.

Whys that mate?
>>
>>29465937
There is nothing wrong with that.

You should join something that is NOT the infantry. Infantry should be your last choice (unless that's what you really want). It all comes down to preference but I would suggest Signals or Engineers. Royal artillery is good if you're looking for something more physical and 'punchy'. If you have a decent brain, Intelligence Corps could be an option.

Go to the careers office and have a chat with them (bear in mind they have quotas to fill so don't just go with the first one they suggest, ask a few of them different questions about different jobs) and take it from there. EVERYTHING you read on ARRSE should be taken with a healthy dose of salt as most of the guys on there will make it their mission to troll you (Civvies are thoroughly unwelcome, even if it isn't spoken out loud. Any questions you have about a particular regiment/corp should be posed as if you're already serving and thinking about transferring or something).

Hope this helps.
>>
>>29467141
Not that guy, but any job that means anything past your current use takes years.

IE a tank mech might get to know in how a tank works in the space of a few months, but that alone isn't useful to a civvie.
if you are in for a long time and transfer often between units you'll see more time in other vehicles, you'll eventually see patterns in how a vehicle is acting up that seen kinda similar to what you worked on before etc

Basicly, you learn your role in the army
if you want to learn skills in the army, you're in for a long time and you need to switch roles when you've learnt when you can
>>
So many britbong military threads today.
>>
>>29466191
Why don't you try the Reserves and see if it suits you? Then you can do one or two exercises a year while still having a life outside where you can look towards other things. Good way to give it a try and find out what people mean by RE, REME, etc and how infantry is fun but not transferable without devoting yourself completely to it.

Also mention me by name when you do so I get a days pay will ya?
>>
What's the Royal Marines like for future employment? Meaning if I got in and served my 4 years and then left, would I have essentially wasted 4 years?

Asking as I know of a guy who served 4 years then left and ended up working manual labour jobs on building sites for years.
>>
>>29466309

The Jackal looks like a fucking minimally armored death trap.
>>
>>29466991

If you are indeed an officer stealing from a charity fund for your men you are a total piece of honor less shit.
>>
>>29467677
Combat arms generally don't have a lot of transferable skills (a lot of former military guys do become police, though).
>>
>>29466412

the CP market is dead on it's ass, any jobs worth having are handed amongst friends. If you don't have SAS connections or friends don't bother doing CP. You will be earning average money walking middle management nobodies around london
>>
>>29467677
most marines leave fast in my experience, so there are shit tonnes of them about looking for jobs. Go intelligence or engineering
>>
>>29466991
Is the term "tanky" used to identify gay men in the Army?
>>
>>29468041
Possibly, amongst infantry almost certainly

>>29467737
The fund was put in place by for all the armored regiments to use to go better themselves and broaden horizons when not fighting or some such. As they've one from seven (7) regiments to one (1), and that x amount must be spent every year or else they lose their charitable status and ultimately the whole lot...

That was what was relayed to me a month or so ago, can't fully remember, needless to say I'm not in the forces, but I do distinctly remember the guy mentioning they all went on a group holiday using it.
>>
>>29465937
Why isn't trade school or community college an option? Loans can be paid off in under 5 years for some trades such as plumbing, and many businesses will hire straight from trade school so they aren't hiring bad habits.
>>
>>29467993
>Go intelligence or engineering

With the intelligence corps do you still get to do "operating" meaning field work and general infantry exercises? Or are you behind a desk?
>>
>>29468379
Go R Signals.

You will learn IT skills which are actually useful in civvy street.

If you fancy yourself an operator you can be attached to marines or even SAS as comm sys op.
>>
>>29468379
>With the intelligence corps do you still get to do "operating" meaning field work and general infantry exercises? Or are you behind a desk?

Depends what you want to do. It's probably one of the most versatile roles in the military.
>>
>>29468488

That and STC (Splash Target Coxswain).
>>
>>29468498
I do not think OP is smart enough for STC, there is a lot of competition for it due to the crazy pay bonus.
>>
>>29468574

Nunno, STC has been opening up given the manpower shortage.
