What wood is the most suitable for making a rifle's stock?
>>
>>29463267
I'm partial to walnut for looks. I've heard ash is a bitch to break though.
>>
>>29463267
Walnut is the classic because it is hard, weather resistant, and looks good.

There is something to be said for red oak, mahogany, and birch though.

Much like your wife's cock that you regularly take up your ass.

I have a stock on a garand that I love the color of. It's definitely light compared to most. Bought from CMP in the 90s. Could someone help me identify wood? Pic can be had. Have been told it's birch before. I believe beech would be too hard?

Walnut is a classic for many reasons. Number one being it's dead sexy

OP, if you don't a decent answer here, /diy/ woodworking threads can probably give some decent advice too.

American Black Walnut is best.
>>
>>29463267
Laminated is great for making stocks yourself, it looks decent, is easy to work with and is really fucking cheap to make.

Walnut looks better, though.

Definitely balsa or knotted pine.

Ash is good for its respectable strength in different categories and also its resistance to splitting.

Beech is good because it's probably the easiest hardwood to work with and it's fairly strong across the board, but not as resistance to rot and moisture as some.

Walnut is the prettiest but not as hard as some. Still enough for the job and the grain is nice and it can be worked quite fine.

I don't know much about Birch.

White oak is probably too heavy to make a good stock, its properties are good for the job but you don't really need to trade weight for more strength and durability than beech.

Walnut's my choice, if I want great strength, durability and practicality then man-made is the way to go.

>I'm a fan of burled walnut, but it's expensive.
And weak too.

It's the plainest of the lot but I just really like Black Walnut even better than European Walnut, just the colour and subtleness of it is really nice.
>>
Can't go wrong with walnut or cedar or ash.

Avoid cottonwood
>>
How is hickory? I don't see anyone recommending it

It's a solid wood that I use for every tool I use. Is it just too heavy or something?

I was about to ask the same thing. A lot of my Swede axes are made with hickory, its a pretty nice wood but there must be something about it.

No, this wonderful magical material known as wood...

Generally when I'm making burl tool handles and stuff I'd reinforce the weaker sections with superglue, then give it a good soak in coloured epoxy resin to fill the gaps. Then do the forming after its dry.
Curly, quilted and spalted pattern timbers are also very decorative- but a lot stronger

>>29465353
>does anymone make teak stocks?
Dunno, could swear I had an old Sako years ago that had teak, but its a bit of a shit to work from a carpentry perspective, its very hard so it beats the shit out of your tools, quite heavy timber and its also got a lot of natural oils in it which make it annoying to finish. Its pretty damn robust though and can take a heck of a beating.

You should design the stock like the Japanese did during world war two since they spliced the wood apart and mad the bottom in a different angle so it is all going to the end without any stops

Idk what im talking about but arisaka rifle stocks are hard to destroy
