unless the stock is damaged, dont mess with it, most aftermarket stocks suck.
as for sights, ide get a little mount that goes in the rear iron right base. dont bother drilling and tapping anything, once again it isnt worth it.
also the mag feeds suck, dont bother.
drop in a rear peep sight, or a rail mount for a red dot and get a good modern sling and call it.

its a cheep rifle. other then the archangel system, which is very expensive and finicky, no one has bothered. also its a rimmed cartridge, difficult to get right in a mag. just hand load or use strippers. polish them before use for good feeding.

One of my m44's that had a bad (inside rot) stock, that i replaced with a boyds. expensive, but very nice looking laminate. the rifle now sports a custom rear peep sight.
