I know that this is /k/ and what not, and I have gone through other and more official channels too, but I am interested to see if there is anyone on here who might have some knowledge.
Anyone here know what the prospects are like for becoming an Air force STO (Special Tactics Officer) through OTS. As in applying as a civilian and getting a contract for OTS and STO selection.
From what I understand the only area of the Air force that is actively being beefed up is their SOF units.

No-go.
OTS accessions for STO require you to hold either the CCT or SOWT enlisted AFSCs.
If you really wanna do JTAC shit as an officer, you should be able to meet a board as an ALO hopeful and go through the TACP schoolhouse.

why does it say here that OTS for civilians can be accepted on a case by case basis then?
I'm a current AD SERE guy for the USAF. Work with CRO's and STO's quite a bit. What do you want to know specifically?
The odds are against you. Train fucking hard.
>>29452966
How are the odds against me? If I manage to land the contract to go through STO selection and training, it is completely on my merrit from that point yes? I understand. Max out all PT tests and try to out perform everyone academically. What else would you recommend? Do you know what they look for in civilians who are going for the OTS program? What could I do especially to make me a candidate to land the contract and get a shot. Thank you so much.
>>29453136
Typically they aren't picking civilians because they don't make it through. They want prior CCT or SOWT guys primarily. If they do select you awesome. Even still you're looking at a 95% washout rate. Train water con hard. It's all based on merit.
If you've got the guts to get it done, get it done.
>>29451111
You could probably get an RPA pilot slot really easily. My friend just went through OTS as one, commissioned of the street. We are dying for Predator and Reaper pilots. Global hawks too, but enlisted will be flying those soon
>>29453192
water con is water confidence yes? So stuff like just swimming for hours and hours on end? Drown proofing (with a partner of course) and such? Where do the washouts usually happen?
>>29451111
You're a pussy if you want to be a special operations officer.
Literally will never see war and just have to deal with the death side and responsibility of death.
Enlist or bust.
>>29453462
Water confidence. I've done a lot with the PJ's and it's primarily
10 ups,
25m underwaters with flutter kicks mountain climbers inbetween on a 2 min pace wearing full jock up (ABU's, BC, flooded mask, snorkel.)
Over and back (10 ups with fins on)
Buddy breathing 2 mins with full harrasment. (Miss 3 breaths capped twice in a row as well.)
>>29453488
... thats one way of saying it. Why do you think officers dont get to see the field? And why do you seem to have an irrational hatred of officers?
>>29452966
What about going ALO (Air Liaison Officer) for a few years then transitioning into STO? Would it be a good preparation for it? Is it possible to apply as a civilian and go to OTS for ALO?
>>29453515
Going in as a TACP officer then transferring to STO is a much better option.
>>29453534
I thought there are no TACP officers? Arent there only ALOs? From what I understand ALOs are basically just TACP officers... am I wrong? What is the difference?
>>29453550
There is most definitely a difference.
>>29453192
Also, are the washouts mostly people dropping themselves or for being kicked by the instructors? Or something like medical conditions rather?
>>29453565
What is that difference? I thought there was no such thing as TACP officer?
>>29453581
People dropping themselves
>>29453593
Talk to newer TACP officers, there is a new wave of officers separate from ALO.
>>29453605
very interesting. And I am assuming that most of them are seeing more action than ALOs? ALso, thank you so much for answering these questions. If you dont mind one more question, At which points do people most drop? Water confidence stuff I assume? Thanks again.
>>29453631
Always water confidence. People flip the fuck out underwater when they breathe it in.
Anyone can run, anyone can do pushups.
>>29453660
So what is supposed to happen? Brief the water in until you begin drowning and they fish you out? Or be able to hold your breath well enough that the water never gets into your lungs? WIth the first question, I mean more so, is it inevitable that they are gonna induce drowning on you to see what kind of sand you got? Or rather, does it stem mostly from guys not being able to keep their breath?
>>29453714
Get really really fucking good at holding your breath. That being said they will probably make you pass out at some point. I did when training with them. It's such a fucking rush.
>>29453728
hahaha. Sounds like it. Why didnt you go the STO or CRO route if you have the sand to do it?
>>29453737
Because I love being a SERE guy. Still in special operations but I do a slightly different job.
>>29453759
what exactly do you do as SERE? I thought SERE was a training school to basically simulate a torture camp to familiarize what it would be like to be in a POW camp. Forgive my ignorance. Are you guys instructors? What do you guys do?
>>29453787
That's one aspect of the job. The other part is working with PJ's doing recovery operations. We're also personnel recovery specialists. I also jump a fuck ton.
It's a weird job.
>>29453928
so its literally innawoods: the job. Doesnt sound bad at all. How often do you guys deploy?
>>29453937
Depends if you want to. People scramble for the opportunity. If you want to you will. If you don't want to you will primarily train people.
