The problem is the planes are also carrying missiles, and unlike the ship they can turn around right after they launch, so the ship doesn't have a chance if the ranges are similar. You can build bigger, longer-ranged missiles, but then you carry less of them and the carrier just has to keep baiting you until you run out. It's a losing game.

those missiles can't hurt a battleship (and even if they could they can still get shot down). Yes, you can make bigger missiles but that means planes can carry less of them, which means they are easier to shoot down.
So the question is can the carrier launch enough missiles to overwhelm the same cost in AA defense? Otherwise it wont be cost effective.
Also a battleship is a floating platform so can carry much larger/longer ranged missiles than a small plane.
