So I've been eyeing the c308 for awhile, thinking of making it my first firearm. I've got a couple of informed friends who advise against it, both say to get an ar. While I agree that the ar is certainly a better gun, I can't help but feel like it's the gun everyone has, plus I'm a history buff and the cetme has a cooler story Imo. Is the cheap price and unique/cool factor strong selling points, or am I just being stubborn? Also, input on cetme/g3 type weapons or roller delay blowback in general
>>
Century has spotty QC.
if you can handle it and check if everything is in order, sure. But I'd rather save an extra $200 and get the PTR.

My first gun was a PTR a few years ago. I'd recommend it, so long as you are concious of any flinching you may be doing. Buy a muzzle brake perhaps, and dry fire practice often. It is a good, simple gun that is easy to maintain, and is fairly foolproof. Ammo may be a bit expensive, as it's $.40+ a round.
>>
I was kinda thinking I'd play around with the shitty century gun and change/upgrade parts as I got a feel for what I liked/didnt like, or as parts needed replacing. Is there a good market for cetme style parts?

7.62x51 battle rifle might not be the first gun, especially if you are comparing it to the generic 5.56 ARs.

Different guns but in the long run, get both. Start with AR/AK, cheaper ammo to plink around and you can ruin it with stupid mall ninja crap which you will want to do as newb.
After you have good amount of experience under your belt you can get the BR and have two good guns.
>>
>>29449109
Not as good as the market for G3/HK91 parts. And the important parts are not really going to be fixed by swapping them out. You'll end up paying more going the piecemeal route than just purchasing a PTR for a bit more. If you can't save up enough to do that you may want to wait to join the shooting community.

OP if you like the G3 aesthetics and ergos + want that unique showflake assault rifle you could entertain the thought of V93.

Essentially 5.56 G3.

C308 owner here

If you get lucky, they're decent rifles. But a PTR gives you so much more for the extra $200 such as more compatibility with surplus G3 parts, lifetime warranty on internal parts, and generally higher build quality.

But honestly, your first rifle should be an AR. Huge after-market and cheap to shoot.

>>29449109
>I was kinda thinking I'd play around with the shitty century gun and change/upgrade parts as I got a feel for what I liked/didnt like

Yeah, there's a part called the ptr91 that makes your cetme a completely different gun. Tad spendy but it's worth the upgrade

It's not exactly what could be called an ideal first gun, but if it's what your heart is yearning for then why deny yourself and get an AR or AK? Buy ammo in bulk online or that cheap 7.62 ZQI puts out at Wally World, watch out for flinching due to the bigger round's recoil, and have a fun show of it.

But keep getting a .22 on the backburner--still can't be beat when it comes to plinking or general practice. Buds sells Polish Wz 48 single shot training rifles for a little under 2 C-bills, and the Marlin 60/Ruger 10/22 are perennial favorites.
>>
>>29449362
new to guns in general?
not really, but not because of any particular failings in the gun, but more because a .308 battle rifle is not an ideal first gun

Be sure to test fire it first.

Personally, I don't like the recoil of a roller locked battle rifle. It feels wrong somehow compared to long stroke & short stroke rifles?

Already tried. Both Walmarts I regularly go to stopped carrying it and getting new shipments altogether.

I contacted SGammo yesterday to see when they would be getting more and they said replacement cost at the moment sucks ass so they're waiting until they can get a good deal on it again.

As far as I can tell Atlantic Firearms has two other exclusive full-sized PTR G3 exclusive models: PTR A3R and PTR A3S. The A3R costs more and has a wider "handle" while the A3S is slimmer and costs less. The PTR website does not list the PTR GI R as an Atlantic exclusive but Atlantic's website does. It seems PTR also has a BUNCH of ".308 pistols" that are exclusive to them. Video related; two of the battle rifle. Pic related; one if the "pistols" mentioned.

>>

>>
>>29449556
Yeah the cracked cases stem from chamber pressure issues. The fluting in most current PTRs prevents this.

Is it not ideal simply because of the recoil or is it just awkward to learn such an awkward design?

The recoil is strong, but manageable. That is the biggest issue. Otherwise it is very simple to operate.

If you are serious about getting real fucking NATO for your first gun, get the PTR. since it's ur first gun if it gives u trouble you'll be frustrated. PTR will take care of you. if u get lucky with the c308 then thats what you'll have, but it's a lot harder to upgrade than a PTR.

Honestly OP .308 is not a good first caliber. I would get an AR or hk93 clone. 5.56 is cheap, plentiful, and good to get the basics down with. You'll be wasting alot of ammo until you figure out how to shoot properly.

I have a C308 and I love it for what it is. But PTR has a better warranty, they are a good degree more accurate too. I bought mine as a toy and excuse to buy more milsurp.
