Seriously, every sport my club does (IDPA, Cowboy, USPSA, Steel Challenge, and the countless rifle competitions) are easily 50% older shooters.
Older shooters may not be as athletic as a 20-something, but they have the time and money to practice.

Worst feeling I've had was when I realized that family doesn't mean shit, it really is just water when compared to the blood of the covenant.
I've been mostly lucky. My father and I used to be on bad terms, but once I stopped being a shithead, we saw eye to eye and he started respecting my passion for firearms, doesn't like it but he understood really quickly when he found out that my 17 year old sister was about a back turn away from being abducted on Halloween in a supposed safe, small town. Then over the course of 8 or so months, there's several cases brought to court over possession child pornography, child molestation and a number of men are caught by the FBI trying to set up a child sex ring, the leader living in town. He started thinking very differently, very quickly. My mother and I always got along very well. Same with still living grandparents, Uncles are different, on my mothers side, for the most part things are okay as long as politics is mentioned, guns are okay though. Fathers side is a mix. I'm on really good terms with about two, one has pretty much been disowned for doing dirty shit with a shit ton of the family's inheritance money he didn't own, and the other two I don't get along with, one is a nice guy but treats any of the younger kids of the family, even adults, like children, the other is just disinterested.
But then again, I've got friends, good friends that even though I don't talk much to, I'd drop everything to help out because I consider them closer than certain members of my family. Some of my very good childhood friends I'd even do quite illegal things for, were they in danger, some things I would have a hard time doing my family, only without hesitation. One I'd even hunt to the ends of the earth because he's one of a handful of people I fully trust and reciprocates this.
Not everybody I'm friends or family with shows that much affection, but you at least have the ability to choose who you care for.
