I'm looking to get my first rifle, guys. Only uses are for recreational shooting once every month or two, probably at soda bottles & shit. Also, I'll admit that I'm pretty gun-retarded.

Currently looking at the S&W M&P Sport 2. Decent rifle?

I'm not poor, but I don't want to spend a bunch on something I'll probably only use a handful of times a year. Any alternatives I should consider?
>>
>>29441351

Internet seems to think it's fine. Lot's of people here recommend a PSA lower and a BCM upper as well.
>>
>>29441351
If you dont mind being spit on by the fags in arg then by all means its a great first rifle
>>
>>29441351
If you're gun retarded it's not a bad choice OP. I love my PSA "premium" AR which costs roughly the same, but it requires assembling the lower.

In any case an AR 15 is a great first rifle. I'd start with iron sights and spend a ton on magazines and ammo.
>>
>>29441507
I was just looking at this kit: http://palmettostatearmory.com/psa-16-m4-cmv-rifle-kit.html

All I'd need is a lower + rear sight or optics. Comes out to about the same price for everything though, so not sure if it's worth building it myself.

>>29441524
ARG is a circlejerk anyway

>>29441592
Thanks dude. I don't mind putting shit together, I just really don't know if it's worth it. I guess I'm not technically "gun retarded", since I own a pistol and a shotgun. Just "rifle retarded".
>>
Im also looking to get my first rifle. I dont want to be a sperg and spend 1.5k on an AR and accessories.
>>
>>29441646
m8 just get the mp15 sport2 like OP
>>
>>29441351
Read that sticky before you wet your dicky
>>
>>29441671
Would I be going full baby mode by getting a 10/22?
>>
>>29441702
If you haven't shot before then yeah you should get both
or just rent a .22 to learn to shoot
>>
>>29441702
Nah, that's a good rifle to learn on. You can find used ones super cheap too.
>>
OP here, back from dinner

>>29441690
That's a good sticky. Now I'm pretty much sold on the M&P Sport if I'm going to buy. Downside is, now I'm thinking about building instead.

>>29441702
If this is your first gun ever, a .22 has less recoil and is cheaper overall. I thought about it myself, but then I decided it would be nice to have the longer range of the .223. Not that I'll actually be able to hit anything that far, though.
>>
Another question: what's the difference between this:
http://palmettostatearmory.com/psa-16-m4-cmv-rifle-kit.html

and this:
http://palmettostatearmory.com/16-m4-cmv-chrome-lined-premium-rifle-kit.html

...aside from $100?
>>
OP here again, after doing about half an hour's worth of research.

I could build a rifle with a PSA kit, Anderson lower, Magpul rear sight, and 1 mag for the same price as an M&P Sport.

Decent parts? Should I do it?
>>
>>29442276
i also would like the answer to this question
>>
>>29442599
Apparently, the "premium" kit has an FN barrel and a BCG that's stamped MP, whatever the fuck that means.

The non-premium kit was also $50 cheaper than it is today up until January, which sucks.
>>
>>29442276
Look at the link. One is chrome lined, the other is not. The chrome lined one is also higher quality (different barrel manufacturer). If you want a "one and done" AR 15, get the chrome lined one it's worth the extra $$$$. You'll likely not wear out either barrel but chrome has a significantly longer barrel life.
>>
>>29442551
Yes, "building" is clearly the better option, albeit if you go with the chrome lined kit.
>>
I have the M&P15 Sport 1, excellent gun. Got mine for $650 a couple years ago. It may not be the most tacticool AR out there but it does what I need it to do.
>>
>>29441351
Get the M&P 15 Sport II, it has the forward assist and dust cover.
>>
>>29442839
"Barrel: 16" Chrome-lined"
Both kits say this. You should check the links again.

>>29442854
Unless the cheaper kit has a typo, they're both chrome lined.

>>29442872
>>29442876
Thanks - I'm leaning towards buying. The single, only reason I wouldn't is the "build" options have a 1/7 twist. Will I realistically care about shooting over 100 yds? Maybe someday.
>>
>>29442960
I bought the Sport II and it's been a great all around rifle, I threw a cheap strikefire II on and it's been fantastic.
>>
>>29442551
buy a premium psa kit
>>
>>29443113
Thanks - I'll probably go that route. Too bad they did away with the Melonite coating & 1/8 twist on the Sports.

Ruger 10/22 or a Marlin .22.

The rifles themselves are cheaper, they have next to no recoil so they're easier for a novice to learn on, the ammunition is much cheaper and they're quieter so they're less likely to piss off your neighbor.

Once you've figured out if you really enjoy shooting then you might look into an AR or possibly get a pistol first.
>>
>>29441351
bumping because I'm in the same boat O.P. You should know the people in AK General have been super accommodating to newfags compared to the rest of /k/.

>>29441702

No a 10/22 is a fun rifle and the ammo is cheap. plinking with a .22 is good fun even if you can handle a .50 cal.
>>
>>29442726
>whatever the fuck that means.
HP testing makes sure the parts are within the designed parameters in how much pressure can be exerted on the part. MP testing means the part is placed under magnetization and looks for defects on and below the surface.

Fuck Anderson. Find a Spike's or PSA lower or something, but Anderson has never had holes drilled right in my experience.

Personally if I were in your position I would just buy pic related from PSA and the upper and rear sight from BCM.
>>
>>29441351
>>29443169

Google PSA AR-15

Purchase lower receiver stripped and buy parts kit, or buy a complete lower. Order any upper in stock, or wait for the holiday sales to get a good deal on upper/ bcg and ch.

bam babys first ar under 600$. Don't waste your money on M&P s&w.

Pic related, BCM.

Compare the cost of building that plus the PSA purchase with the cost of a complete BCM rifle.

https://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/cPath/36_1200/products_id/411551360

You save a decent amount of cash.
>>
>>29443161
I mentioned that I own a couple guns and enjoy shooting, although I really only have a chance to do it once every month or two. I'll probably get a .22 pistol eventually for general low-cost plinking.

>>29443169
Good to know. This thread's been pretty accommodating so far. Thanks, guys.

>>29443195
AH, right on. I learned those terms as HPT and MPI and was apparently too stupid to make the connection. My bad.

>>29443208
>>29443247
That's a lot more rifle than my novice no-rifle-having-ass probably needs.

>>29443236
That's been my dilemma for like an hour, broski.
>>
>>29443190
i completely agree. i think too many people dismiss the 22lr, wrongly categorizing low cost and recoil as somehow less serious as larger calibers.

He really doesn't need a bcm gun, for what hes going to use it for, he might as well save $$$ on a psa gun and buy extra ammo and magazines.
>>
>>29443303
Would be great trolling material in /ARG/ though.

"Guys is my BCM good?"
>>
>>29443236
Those are like $600 and they are fine rifles.
>>
I wish I would've researched this shit around black friday. I bet PSA had some decent deals on their shit.
>>
>>29443280
what is the dilemma exactly bro beans?

When you buy your upper

>Make sure its not a light weight or pencil profile barrel
>Make sure it has a forward assist and muzzle break and bayonet lug
>yes you do want the bayo lug
>1:7 shoots better with 62gr but it works fine.
>>
Not O.P. but what do you think about these two packages? I'm mostly concerned in regards to whether or not they are a good deal price-wise. I'm also interested in whether or not they maybe offer too much or too little for a beginner/entry-level shooter.
>>
>>29443353
Whether to build the PSA or buy the M&P. I'll probably mostly shoot shitty bulk 55gr, so I'm guessing I'll be fine with a 1/9 barrel. If I outgrow the M&P later on, I can just sell it, take a little loss, and build something ARG-worthy.

>>29443378
...which packages?
>>
>>29443378
what packages
>>
>>29443378
Oops, forgot link. http://www.snipercentral.com/sniper-central-entry-level-tactical-rifles/

>>29441351
also yeah, AKG seems to know a lot not just about what is available in what price range but they really seem to care about using than most of the gun-specific communities.
>>
>>29443400
>entry-level
>over $1000

One of these things is wrong
>>
>>29443395
the premium psa line that has a FN barrel is the best entry AR imo
>>
>>29441351
That or a ruger AR-556
>>
>>29443416
Alright, let us pretend that the "entry level" is the wrong. Are either of the sets a decent deal based on price and product(s)?
>>
>>29441507
People on /k/ keep recommending PSA. While that's fine, I've never seen PSA have an A2 lower in stock on the website. Am I just fucked if I want A2?
>>
>>29443466
you mean with an a2 stock kit?
>>
>>29443433
True. It's essentially the same rifle, just a tiny bit more expensive.
>>
>>29443489
ruger has a few proprietary parts though
>>
>>29443208

Anderson is fine, especially if you end up using a magpul grip of any sort.

They come with a short screw so even in the off chance you get one without a fully drilled one you're good.
>>
>>29443485
Yeah, the fixed stock. I'm looking to build an AR-15A4 clone, I just love the look and feel of it with the long barrel and fixed stock. Plus bayonet is more fun with long rifle
