It saw Rhodesia, saw both sides of the Falklands war, the Suez Crisis, the Bay of Pigs Invasion, the Gulf War, it now sees the Syrian War, and is also in the hands of a small African child

Yeah, when it came out it was revilutionary, but just 10 years later comes the Luger pistol which is better in every single way.
The C96 is front/top heavy, and the grip is down low and far back, this makes it handle like an extremely awkward revolver and gives it a lot of muzzleflip (which is one of the reasons the select fire ones are dangerous to shoot in full auto without the stock attached), it loads really awkwardly and is needlessly big.
Then you look at the Luger, the first truly practical short-recoil automatic to be offered as a service pistol; it's well balanced, compact and lightweight, it has a very low bore axis in comparison (making it very friendly for point shooting) and recoils quite gently, reloading is a breeze.
The Luger takes the everyone by storm, it is literally the best service pistol in the world by 1908, commercial sales and military sales are through the roof, blowing the Mauser out of the water, it would only be topped by the 1911 in terms of practicality, and even then retained staying power into the 30s
But with that said, I adore both the Luger and Mauser.

The FAL is not as "good" as an AR if you put cartridge concerns aside.
But compared to other rifles from its era, its an objectively superior rifle. This includes an AR from the early days as well. It wasnt until like ten years ago that all the little issues with the AR got ironed out.

Why do people say the FAL has good ergonomics? I did a back to back of a FAL clone and a PTR that my buddies had, and I definitely felt the PTR had better ergos. The bolt release and magazine catch on the FAL are in a weird position, and prevent you from doing quick mag changes à la the AK series, because the bolt release blocks the catch. The controls were also small, making them harder manipulate under pressure, whereas the PTR just needed the HK slap.
I own an AR and not either of these guns, I have no dog in this fight, I was just taken aback at how convoluted the FAL controls were.

The bolt release is literally right next to the finger when you rock in a mag

The PTR I shot had the paddle mag, I just swept the old mag out and rocked in the new one just like an AK. That can't be done on the FAL, nor can it be done like the AR where you flick the mag out as you load another one in.
I also thought the PTR recoiled less harshly, but I didn't fuck with the FAL gas system so maybe that was the factor there.

There's .300BLK if you want something closer to the AK
.308 works, but it's designed for a range that infantry combat just doesn't happen at, so you might as well go for an intermediate cartridge for practicality's sake, soldiers just aren't going to be utilizing the full potential of the .308 so it's practically wasted.
