Ok /k/, I'm going to be in Ireland for 5 years as a student. Although I'm not an Irish citizen, I believe as an EU citizen I am able to join the Irish Reserve Defence Force, so I am planning on doing so for the duration of my stay in Ireland. I still don't know what corps I'm going to join, I may just go with my local regiment.

Does anyone have any advice/thoughts on this? I don't really know what I'm getting into other than it seems like a good laugh.
>>
>>29438009
>it seems like a good laugh
That's great. Don't do it. Service is the highest calling. Taking it lightly impugns the respect it bears.

I'm sorry, are you a member of the PDF/RDF?

Correct. I never served beyond 10 years. How long have you served?
>>
>>29438009
I think that would be kind of cool, The Irish defense forces are pretty well trained...sadly the government refuses to give the air corps for a decent fighter.
>>
>>29438009
PDF here anon, tell me which barracks is closest to you. It depends on what corps will be available to you from that
>>
>>29438119
>Dicking around in the Irish countryside shooting AUGs
>Showing up on weekends to play dressup
>Never going to war or getting deployed ever

Truly the highest calling

Hi there, thanks for replying. I'll be based in Louth, I think in Dundalk (things aren't certain just yet).
>>
>>29438165
Lol the Irish government would benefit if they deployed the RDF...but no
>>
>>29438187
Yeah they'd take the offensive to all those countries currently attacking Ireland and finally have peace in the Republic.

Seesh
>>
>>29438170
Definitely. Military service is terrible, isn't it? Tell me all about your service?

No?

I see the common denominator among critics is that they've never done a fucking thing in the service of their country.

Go figure.
>>
>>29438181
The way it works now is you do your 1 star training at a camp and the rest is completed at a barracks. Expect to wait a while for your application to be processed.

I'm not sure how corps selection works for reserves but I assume you'll get some kind of choice. It won't be as varied as PDF because you can't move around a lot. What corps interest you?

I think I read somewhere that the Irish government had accepted a proposal to completely re-organise the RDF so that they're more similar to other European reserve forces. Part of that would be volunteering for deployment. I don't know when that will come into force
>>
>>29438210
I just think if they had more presence in UN missions and had a better air corps they could fucking escort those Russian bombers flying in your airspace. I actually respect the PDF as an American.
>>
>>29438218
Sure, you totally were a soldier, and real soldiers think like that!
>>
>>29438164
>>29438233
One of the camofags here, would you be able to sell any of your Irish DPM gear? Able to buy another "replacement" uniform?
>>
>>29438233
>>29438234

PDF guy again,

Yes there has been a lot of organisation and in the recent white paper there's definitely a push to get Reserves overseas or on more domestic stuff.

BUT

The PDF have issues dealing with RDF officers simply because these guys have a lot less training and experience in comparison to a full time officer. From what I can tell they'll be going off in small numbers at first and maybe in humanitarian duties mostly. It'd be a disaster if a Jimmy, father of three, was killed in Syria because his officer was a reservist and couldn't deal with stressful situations
>>
>>29438009
Do it the training will always come in handy
>>
>>29438260

Same guy from all these replies.

Absolutely a no go. Shit's illegal thanks to the IRA dressing up as real soldiers every now and again. At best you can get some shit from the 80's that's not even camo
>>
>>29438274
It would be smart to send them to a proper cadetship and the enlisted to a recruit training...oh well
>>
>>29438218
You can't win

If you're some kid lying on the internet, then you're stupid

If you're actually a serviceman that thinks nobody should enjoy the military, then you're autistic.
>>
>>29438253
actually quite a few of them do trust me it gets annoying when little bitches give nothing but criticism about every thing you do even though they were to big of pussies to do it
>>
>>29438252
When have Russian bombers ever flown into Irish airspace.
>>
>>29438312
Look up the definition of sarcasm, child.
>>
>>29438300
An 18 month course last time I checked. PDF officers are trained in everything from basic section level stuff to ISTAR and more. Honestly no employer would be willing for an employee to take that much time off.

I might also mention that soldiers in the Irish Army must constantly upskill. Same for Navy and the Air Corps
>>
>>29438320
Doubt it.
>>

oh yeah military service is fun as hell I thought you were referring to the.... fuck it never mind

>>
>>29438233
I think I'm open minded at the moment, though having looked into it, I'm quite interested in IT and I think the training the CIS provide might be the most directly translatable into my civilian life. I could be wrong there though.

I don't know if it helps but I speak a number of languages, it doesn't seem like any job would fit that skill though unfortunately. Still, no big deal.

>>29438299
I don't mean to hound you for shit, just have some questions.

You mean Troubles era gear? That's still pretty nice quality stuff.

So they regulate DPM gear heavily? There's no way a package addressed to an amerifat could slip though the front gates of the barracks?
>>
>>29438342
Well at least Ireland can defend itself by calling the Royal Air Force and asking very nicely.
>>
>>29438342
>>29438322
>>29438252

The RAF currently fills that role. The Air Corps has just started doing overseas stuff. It's safe to say that jet fighters aren't happening for a while. The DF are currently trying to grow airlift capability and ISTAR capability

>>

It's a potato nigger, what do you expect? I'd put money on it that the guy can't even finish a three word sentence without slurring is speech.

What a fucking pathetic mindset. Were you born with a flagpole jammed up your ass?
>>

>B) you really don't know to many vets do you?

Ah, I wonder if that's why you think like this
>>
>>29438361
It's a one way ticket to a dishonourable discharge. Stuff from the 80's looks a bit like the Israeli Defence Forces uniform sans cool electronic gear.

It's considered a terrorist act to be selling these uniforms from what I've heard. There was one guy in the Army who decided that it wasn't fun and joined the IRA. (This was in the 80's/90's) shot some lad in the SAS if you believe Andy McNab

Also my current posting is quite heavily monitored.

>>29438379
There are two week/ four week events during the summers

>>29438402

Well the Augustas were quite popular with the Air Corp acquisition guys. Now, Blackhawks were even more popular but some fucking hippy bitch started blubbing about Somalia and it went out the window

The military in Ireland has only recently been getting good publicity. So baby steps but maybe one day
>>
>>29438428
>Now, Blackhawks were even more popular but some fucking hippy bitch started blubbing about Somalia and it went out the window

No way was that the reason Ireland didn't get Black Hawks
>>
>>29438428
Wow, because Somalia happened you guys will not get Blackhawks...Damn son The Westlands are pretty cool, surprised you guys did not get hueys back in the 70's and 80's, The Irish defense forces are pretty interesting lol
>>
>>29438413
dude believe what you want your really not important enough to continue hassling with you may think you 12 year old noguns bull shit is worth my time but its not regarding the two matters mentioned most vets A) Loved there time in the military and B) fucking hate it when people who never served opened there cock holsters to spew forth there retarded nonsense about how we should do or should have done our perspective jobs that's a fact of life you cant deny it there are exceptions but 90% of people who are or have served feel that way now enjoy your butt hurt ill be ignoring your ass from here on
>>
>>29438449

I shit you not, she said they were too "warry"
Buying from America was a political hot potato. We were offered the m16/m4 platform when we were buying new rifles. For free. But big bad America so it was a no.

Recently enough we bought Javelins and there was some grumbling but people were more open to it. I'd say Sea Kings or something would be the next batch of helicopters as the Naval Service is designing our first frigate.

Baby steps anon
>>
>>29438009
Watch out for the new Irish Bombers...they wear black and wield AK's but are not catholic or protestant.
>>
>>29438450
>>29438449

Completely forgot to mention that she's part of a Sinn Fein circle of anti-army people. Surprise surprise, the IRA's political wing doesn't want the Republic having soldiers
>>
>>29438483
Wow, you guys will not buy from America and were offered free m16 platform rifles and you said no...but you will buy from Britain lolol holy shit.
>>
>>29438497
To be fair there was a definite push for bullpup. Buying from the Brits and Americans is totally new. We've been buying from the likes of Sweden, Austria, and Switzerland for a while though
>>
>>29438428
You don't happen to know about any places that I COULD POSSIBLY find some of the older stuff, do you? I have a set of the mid 90's Westport OD stuff, and I'm in love with it.

I have a little money with some Irish bloke's name on it.

Don't answer here if you can't.

I'd say some of the online shops might have stuff. It's a quick google away. You might get lucky on places like "armysurplusireland.com"
>>
>>29438509
Yeah you had the FAL before the AUG and the Vampire? jet...I guess the British thing is new, I am surprised we(US) have not gifted you with lots of goodies.
>>

I'm pretty sure this is just a staged photo, for those purposes there's no need to put the hammer back.

>It'd be a disaster if a Jimmy, father of three, was killed in Syria because his officer was a reservist and couldn't deal with stressful situations

Maybe they don't have to be deployed in those kind of situations though. Keep them on bases, guard duty and stuff.
>>
Hmmm me too. I believe with the m16 thing we had to pay for spare parts. The SA80 did absolutely awfully. I talked to a guy on the test platoon for the rifles. The magazines just slid out of their own accord, they couldn't clear any kind of dirt, the trigger was shit, on and on

>>29438574
Yeah that's the kind of situation I'd see too. Not that Syria is going well. We're the last UN outpost in the area
>>

Aaand I ballsed that up. It was fun talking lads but I have to go to bed. I hope ye learned something new
>>
>>29438582
Oh well, the M16 parts would not have been that expensive! I know The NZDF are starting to replace the AUG with the Lewis machine and tool AR15.
>>
>>29438582
I think a good way to use the RDF would be to look for situations where PDF soldiers are just kind of waiting around and marking time. Are there any UN missions where the RDF could just take over and free up PDF?

Any idea where I could find more info about the Westport stuff and where to get it? I have this jacket that I got off my ex's neighbour but it's missing its hood, however googling the info on the labels hasn't turned up anything.
It's a shame since the lack of a hood is the only thing I don't like about it.
