General Consensus

>Mobil 1 oil wears on steel
>anything organic rots
>inb4 oil is organic
>CLP is trash
>grease is for large bearing surfaces, not slide rails
>grease captures more shit and requires more removal and reapplication than oil
>Hoppes is cheap and will last you 6 months to a year

Any other opinion is trash
>>
the problem with the oil vs grease debate is that autists think you have to SEE oil for it to be effective

No, oil gets in all the little pockets and grooves of the steel and does it's job without having to be globbed on

If your oil is running, you've applied too much

CLP for oil

Haven't really cleaned anything in a long time though. I would venture to say that the overwhelming majority of people way overclean their firearms. They think their doing it good by scrubbing it clean, all they're really doing is causing accelerated wear.

I just got gifted a winchester 1897 pump shotgun (manufactured in the 40s/50s I think). Poor thing has seen better days, let's clean it up.
>Iveseensomeshit.jpg
After about an hour call up father (gifter).
>"Yo pops, I started cleaning that shotgun. Holy shit man..."
His slightly sheepish reply was "Yeah, I loved shooting that gun but I never cleaned it once"
I'm now worried that removing all the gunk may make the poor thing fall apart (not really but wtf man, never over 30 years did you clean your favorite shotgun?)

I learned something today. We all obsess over cleaning guns just a bit too much. Really if you are cleaning your gun, however it may be done, you at least care enough to go through the process. That counts for something.

This is too true. I haven't cleaned one of my USP 9's in 5200 rounds. Still runs fine, and I have been running grease on the rails. Oh and for the record, I do all my shooting outside, and the gun has seen plenty of dust/dirt without a hiccup.

Pretty much any oil works, but most motor oils give a higher Fe content in a UOA than something pure like Hoppes

You literally only need individual drops
Smear it with a finger and it'll be good to go for a quite awhile
If you notice it slowing down or gritty at all, 1 drop and smear

Boretech solvents for cleaning slip2000 for oiling. The cleaners are nontoxic and clean better and faster than anything I've ever tried before, the oil is nontoxic as well and it does an okay job, I don't particularly care as long as the gun isn't rusting.

Would anyone bother linking a decent maintenance guide that applies to an AR-15? I don't shoot super often since the range is nearly an hour away. I don't have any lube except some frog lube that I don't even know what its for (my dad insisted on giving me it). I clean the buildup out of my entire gun after shooting because I feel like I take so long between range trips that I can't leave it or something bad will happen even if it's not a lot.

I don't know what to oil, how often to oil

Can't put it in the lathe, you'll crush the rib and/or it's a double barrel.

Can't use a drill press, barrel's about 2 feet too long.

That leaves, what, hand drill? Yep. hand drill. Which operate at between 100 and 1500 RPM.

I've been using it. Seems to last longer shooting suppressed than Outer's and Hoppes oils. My 11.5" and 9mm ARs last longer before cycling problems begin, perhaps 400-500 rounds now instead of 150-250 rounds.

Also I cracked my needle applicator bottle trying to refill it and George Fennell sent me a new, full one on his dime which is rad.

i dont really like to clean my guns. i just wipe them down with oil to prevent rust and occasionally grease the actions and wipe them down, the grease picks up all the fouling pretty good so when you regrease it's clean enough

Well, ballisrol is my mainstay, but recently I got a few samples of Slip 2000 and I really like it. I don't think I'll dump ballistol, but I'm thinking of using slip 2000 exclusively on my AR-15 now.

Balistol

It cleans, lubes, protects metal, plastic, wood, leather, class, composites, its all natural and acts as a nice air freshener too.

Ballistol cannot be beat though hoppes solvent works good on the tough stuff and their oil is good too.

For my things that need grease like M1A I use

lubriplate-130
