>>
The improvements are not significant enough to justify spending the money to introduce a new service rifle
>>
Non-STANAG mags and melting problems for starters.

By the time they fixed those, it was too late. No point in replacing the AR out of service when there isn't much out there that does a better job.
>>
>>29433933
Seems like a minor problem that can easily be fixed. Polymer is the future deal with
>>
>>29433922
isis somehow got ahold of them. some guy in a random vid had one.
>>
>>29433922
whats the point of a plastic gun if you don't keep the plastic to a minimum.

you only need a metal reciever and barrel, then the bare minimum of plastic furniture to keep it together, what is the point of using materials with reduced weight when you load it up with pointless furniture anyway.

Somehow the idea that a rifle needs decoration is stuck in the mind of weapon designers.

It was slightly better than the current service rifles of US military but not so much better that it would have been worth the cost and trouble of replacing the old weapons and teaching everyone to use new guns.

The "melting" bit was exaggerated and would have been fixed with little trouble.

Because the AR platform works fine. It's basically future proof being able to be constantly upgraded without requiring major changes to existing training program or extensive conversion courses for existing members.

has anyone here done the SL8 conversion yet? I think it'd be a cool snowflake gun to take to the range. are you restricted to 20rd mags?

>>29435360
No, the guy that does it, Tommy Tactical or whatever, offers an option in the conversion to use regular G36 mags.
I will eventually get one of these, though. I've wanted one ever since I played MGS4.
>>
the real reason was because it was significantly more expensive than the M16 and offered little benefit to warrant replacing the entire armed forces and having to retrain them.
>>
>>29435504
It wasn't more expensive.
>>
XM8 used different mags and could not accept the optics or grips or grenade launchers or any of the spare parts for the M16 platform they had lying around. Replacing the M16/M4 with the XM8 would mean everything in the stock would have to be replaced too.
The XM8 had only some marginal advantages over the M16 so in the end the military decided it wasnt worth it
>>
>>29433922

The Army literally doesn't want a better rifle.
They got their super futuristic rifle back in the 60's (and fucked up its deployment terribly)
and aren't interested in a new one.
>>
>>29435526

It's more expensive to buy a new thing than it is to hold on to your current thing.
>>
>>29433922

>>
>>29435572
That's intentionally misleading.
>>
>>29435553

You could make all those same arguments for the M14 being replaced by the M16.

Wow thats a pretty good point
>>
>>29435594
We don't throw money at the military for small upgrades like we did in the last century
>>
>>29435553
Pretty much this, the heat problem was fixed and it still weighed less than the m16 but it wasn't made with picatinny rails in mind and the optic ran out of battery fast.
>>
>>29435553
All this is true, H&K had a descent chance of winning but they were relentless shills. Replacing the M16 wasn't enough, they tried to pimp their entire XM8 line which included conversions to turn the gun into a PDW, LMG, and DMR. They overstepped to say the least.
>>
>>29435622

Not on rifles, anyway.
I can think of plenty of other military spending boondoggles.
>>
>>29434207
is this an xbox?
>>
>>29435594
The situation was different back then though
One f the reasons is what >>29435622 stated

But there are a lot of other reasons leading up to the replacement too including but not limited to: Due in part due to the rivalry between the Joint Chiefs of staff, Pentagon, Secretary of Defense McNamara, Head of Army, and Head of the Air Force butting heads against each other wanting replace or keep the M14.
The army wanted to keep the M14 because they believed any ammo less than .308 caliber was not sufficient stoppan powah. The Air Force and some in the Pentagon was impressed by the AR15 rifle.

Another reason that pushed for the adaptation of the rifle was that the M14 was being produced at a rate too slow to meet the needs of troops in Vietnam. They thought, "why not introduce some M16 rifles to fill the gap? They can be produced faster too." or something along those lines.

There are a whole lot of other things too, but situation surrounding the replacement of the M14 with M16 is different from the situation surrounding the M16 vs XM8

They tried to fish out what caused the overheating problems but couldn't do it.
>>
it was one huge cash grab by HK

the first version, that almost got adopted with out competition. had proprietary optics and magazines. the military's current inventory of optics, lights, lasers, magazines, etc;could not be used on it.

then there was the whole modular bullshit. they wanted the same basic receiver and other parts, to build a DMR, LMG, rifle, carbine, and PDW.

did nothing better than the M16A4 and M4A1.

>delta force land warrior

Ugh, that game was fucking horrible, much worse than Delta Force 2. They even used 2D sprites instead of 3D models for first person view guns in DFLW.
>>
>>29435594
There was quite a difference going from a battle rifle to a modern and lightweight assault rifle. Exchanging a 5.56mm assault rifle for another 5.56mm assault rifle, rifle that offers marginally more features, is pretty much useless. It is safe to assume that no new assault rifle will ever be adopted unless a completely new technology shows up.
>>
>>29436689
Nah, it won't. The problem is how the procurement system has changed into the dysfunctional shit it is now. New technology has shown up all along. But the procurement defines what it wants as if it could force inventions that way and, at the same time, overlooks the new technologies on the market because of a "lack of requirement". Which is why we're stuck with technology that's half a century old.

The US Army's competitions for New service rifles have been Catch and Release since the 70s.

This would be more of a problem on the Army's part rather than HK or the gun. Like Ian said in his Q&A they wanted to replace things without thinking about the fact that they are in service for a reason.

Don't forget having to either buy all new accessory items to mount on the fancy new points, or having to put on rail attachments that negate the weight savings of the fancy bits.
