If you check the chamber every time what's the big deal? It's like not charging your phone until you need it or filling up on gas until the engine's stalling.
I always clear a firearm before handling it. I always hand people an unloaded firearm with the slide/bolt open.
In fact, I keep all my guns in my safe with the bolts open or a flag in the chamber.
If the bolt/slide isn't open or there's no flag in it, then I know it's loaded. As in the case of any firearms stored bedside.
I have had one, only one, ND in my 15 years of firearms handling. I tried to bring the hammer down manually, with a round in the chamber, on a Beretta Bobcat. The hammer slipped out of my finger and I made a neat .22 inch hole in the ground in front of me. All that was lost was a little pride and skin from a small slide bite. I knew better than to have even a .22 pointed anywhere but a safe direction when I did this, so there was no harm. An important lesson in familiarizing yourself with a new gun before fucking around with it.

It has hundreds of different legal definitions. The 1994 law's definition. The 2005's, 2006's, 2007's, etc proposed federal law definition, the definitions for every state law that has its own definition and prohibition on "assault weapons," and every state legislature that tried to outlaw "assault weapons."
Most of them have common characteristics but an assault weapon in one state can not be in another. It's an arbitrary definition that was invented in the late 1980s by the media to confuse people between "assault weapon" and "assault rifle" to more easily outlaw semi-automatic guns.

I never keep them chambered but magazines full and inserted.
I always check the chamber before doing ANYTHING with it (transporting, walking in the house playing like a kid, etc.).
At the range i always double check before storing it, do not insert magazines.
