Hey /k/ i dig this mosin out from under my grandpas house and its got a good amount of rust on it, anything i can do to rejuevinate this metal back to its former glory? I know nothing about blueing or refinishing metals

Hoppes #9
Rem oil
Coca-Cola
0000 Steel Wool
Semen
Ham
>>
>>29426738
Will this stop it from rusting or will it help the finish on it? I want to do a full on restoration on this rifle and make it look fresh from the tractor factory
>>
>>29426701

electrolysis will blast loose rust off of it. you will need a car battery, cables and a big enough tank of water to fit the rifle in.
>>
>>29426767
Just clean the rust off with Hoppes #9 and 0000 Steel Wool. Then give the metal a coat of oil. Dont fucking restore it, it takes away from the value. Even if it is a Mosin. Can we see a pic of the full rifle

Fuck do what ever you want with it. Its worth about 50 bucks
>>
So you think i could just obrez this puppy? Also i really dont care about the resale value or anything i intend to keep it forever and ever i just want it to be nice n' crispy
>>
Im by no means a gunsmith, i just want to keep my grandads old rifle nice. Idk if i sound retarded or whatever but im curious as to the first guys suggestions with the coca cola, what would i do with it, soak it?
>>
>>29426901
Yeah, Coca Cola eats the fuck out of rust. But if you soak it, it will east the finish, too.
Consider it a last resort- use more standard solvents and oils + elbow grease first.
I'd consider electrolysis the best in dealing with deep, non-superficial rust.

Dude seriously? I can go to big fucking 5 and get a mosin for 200 dollars. Not with an A303, not with an enfield not with a k98.
Its like comparing a luger with a nambu.
Either way it's not like im some fudd who smoked a bunch of crank and hacked a rifle down

Its pretty funny to see the parallels with Krags and Mosins. When Krags got dumped on the Surplus market people sporterized the shit out of them Now three out of five Krags are sporters. Now no one wants the sporters and the original condition rifles got for 1000 easy

>>29427445

>>29427320
What the fuck is he gonna do? Travel back in time and stop his grandpa from making the shit heap usable? It's worth more to him in this condition since that's how his grandfather made it instead of as a shitty rearsenal job anyways

My Mohawk here has some stubborn surface rust/discolouring on the shiney bolt carrier. Will something like CLR fuck it up?
>>
>>29427478
Is the Mohawk any good? I hear they are blow up in your face guns if you look at them wrong
>>

Looks like you have what collectors call a "Finn Cub" sporter. These were done by Interarms back in the 1960s and sold through Montgomery-Ward's department store. The front sight base is a backwards-mounted M1903 Springfield sight.

Generally, these rifles were cut-down M91/30s that came from Finland or Spain. If Spanish, it might have "Made in USSR/URRS" stamped on the metal somewhere.

>>29426795
>Just clean the rust off with Hoppes #9 and 0000 Steel Wool.
This will help to remove the surface rust, without harming the bluing underneath. Electrolysis is for dealing with corrosion that has resulted in deep pitting; doesn't look like it's to that point yet.
>>
>>29427469
Thank you jesus. All these fuck hats getting tears in their beer about a rifle that isnt theirs.
>>
>>29427469
He can't unsporterize it, but the "it's just a Mosin I can find them anywhere for super cheap" needs to die.

Wat
>>
>>29427483
So what does that mean in terms of collecting? I really dont give a shit and i wouldnt sell this rifle to anyone but im just curious. Ive never heard of finn cub
>>29427490
I agree but it is what it is. Sure, a mint condition '85 honda will still go for more than a shitty one but bottom line its still and '85 honda
>>
>>29427515
You are still probably looking at 100-200 bucks
>>
>>29427515
How many fervent collectors of '85 Hondas are there? Because I know a ton of mosin collectors.
>>
>>29427490
You literally can get them anywhere still, you'd just be a huge fucking idiot to buy a piece of shit for 300 dollars
>>
>>29427536

>>
>>29427538
You literally don't know what you are talking about and you literally can't literally get them anywhere because the imports have literally dried up. Literallty.

>stop liking what I don't like!

I've never shot it. Can't be too bad-my grandpa bagged a durr with it a few decades ago. And while it's sat in a closet for a long time, it seems to cycle fine when I put some rounds in the mag. No FTEs, kicks them well clear, etc. It seems like it works fine. It should, since it's really just an SVT with a different barrel, stock and cut gas tube.

I'm just waiting for a cross pin to come in before I can give it a go.

>So what does that mean in terms of collecting?

Not much. They're just a bit of an oddity, though like the Bannerman Mosins there are some collectors that want one just because it's part of the whole history of the Mosin-Nagant in military/civilian use. It's probably worth $150 max.
>>
>>29427478
If the polish off the rust beforehand then no. You might want to simply apply something like Renaissance Wax after though. It works great on my hand me down phosphated 870 which I suspect actually wicked moisture from the air or something. No idea why they couldn't use like a fraction of a cent on grease at the factory but whatever.
>>
>>29427559
This I see mundane 1944 91/30s run for $220+... even the ammo is averaging $0.50 a round.

Just picked up a my first , a 1943 tula + 440 rounds, for $300.
>>
>>29426701
I recommend a 1:10 solution of CLR or Limeaway and hot dish soap water. Soak briefly until metal warms up to be almost too hot to handle.

This will help clean out any cosmoline and rust and you can gently buff/scrub with 0000 steel wool / rough sponge pad.

That solution WILL eat up finish though so only use it on the bolt or as a surface cleaner and immediately wipe with a warm cloth before it damages the finish.

Has anyone here tried hunting with a Nugget using iron sights only?

everyone else has said it; #9 and lightly buff with steel wool.

I've used vinegar to remove heavy rust before, shit worked like a charm. Just let it sit in it for a couple hours and you're good.

I dunno what it would do to the bluing, but I'd assume it'd be fine. I've used it on old hatchets, pliers, scissors, etc and brushed it off easily after so I'm assuming you'd be able to just put all the metal parts in, at least the ones that aren't colored.
