It's a Derringer, so it doesn't have to cycle, reasonably, they might as well have it in 9mm Luger (or .357, if you think that's logical), otherwise you could get a .380 automatic or revolver which isn't that much larger, holds more bullets, is readily identifiable as a deadly weapon to prospective threatening individuals.
