What does /k/ think of the British Armed Forces?
>>29423579
great bunch i would join but sadly im not part of the Commonwealth
as a Murican i think the soldiers are probably pretty decent guys that are good at their jobs
their elite groups like the SAS are among the best in the world at secret squirrel stuff
i don't blame the soldiers for their govt's issues like lack of funding or a fucking ramp
>>29423579
This thread is going to be terrible.
Trolls, trolls everywhere.
The British Armed Forces is a high trained, well equip (for the most part) specialised force with limited global power projection.
Shares the same power bracket as France, though there's a difference in areas of focus. France is highly capable in some places that the UK is not, and the UK is highly capable in some places that France is not, but that's what allies are for.
>>29423645
The ramp was the best choice when you look at the wider picture.
Things nuclear power, steam catapults or EMALS would come at a serious cost with a logistical nightmare in setting up the infrastructure, training and manning for it.
Totally would have crippled the whole program.
>>29423579
I think the Conservative government has actually started to step up the game properly, with 2.1% of GDP going to the armed forces they're complying with the NATO minimum, and the new carriers, F35's, APC's and improved SA80's amongst other things are very needed improvements. It's going in the right direction.
If Jeremy Corbyn is elected next time around they're proper fucked though
plagued by a shitty government and a less than reliable rifle.
>>29423768
>>29423780
There's nothing wrong with the service rifle, excluding the stale memes around it.
L22A2 is fine.
>>29423780
Government yes, but the rifle has changed a lot since the original shit one, it's now pretty reliable.
>>29423801
It had issues. It no longer has those issues. That's what I said.
Does the SAS still use M4A1's and browning hi-powers?
>>29423841
thats nzsas
>>29423841
They have been using Canadian C8's since the 90's.
>>29423822
Sorry, your wording had me.
>improved SA80's amongst other things are very needed improvements
Can be misread.
>>29423841
Who knows, but they make use of the C-8 and I'm sure they'll happily use all the surplus Hi-Powers given everyone else is getting Glocks 17s now.
>>29423882
What's wrong with the glock 17?
>>29423841

Nothing.
But some in the special forces might have personal preferences, that's all.
Will there ever be a war between the UK military and the UK police over weapons?
Those cheeky military wankers should save a live and bin that knife
>>29423946
Normal police don't deal with military stuff, we got our own REMF (pog) military police force.
>>29423992
I can't believe you took that question seriously.
>>29424042
I knew it wasn't serious, but I might as well be factual as possible when talking about the UK when on /k/.
Good troopers, but not the Few and the Proud.

My impression as a bong is.
Army:
>Well trained
>Budget constrained
>Strange gaps in capability caused by bad decisions (like the fact we've got no maritime patrol planes as an island nation until the P-8 is delivered.)
>Absolutely no practical need for our nuclear deterrent as a NATO member state, although it serves as a useful off the shelf penis extender for our old-man country at the UN (unless you count deterring up the French, can't trust the buggers. I'd say showing up, but France honestly put more effort into their deterrent than us.)
>>29423768
>If Jeremy Corbyn is elected
Retaking the empire is less fanciful.
>>29423579
Well trained, budget got hit hard but it's improving again, some fucking great modern kit and the older stuff all has replacements coming soon anyway.
They're back out of the ditch they had a brief detour into (As pretty much all EU countries did too) and they've been doing fucktons of work globally over the past 15 years during it too.
Still wouldn't trust them with my fucking cleaning kit though. Last time I ever make that mistake.
>>29424734
I'd hardly call second strike capability not a practical need. Both Strategic Defence and Security Reviews make a very clear case for it.
There's only 18 subs with Trident equipped and we own four of them! In relative proportions compared to most brit/yank ratios, I think that's a fairly decent representation.
Controversial opinion: If I had to make a choice between gutting the Army and keeping Trident or ditching Trident and funding the Army, I'd pick the former.

>Still wouldn't trust them with my fucking cleaning kit though.
Your issued cleaning kits are better than ours and you were daft enough not to chain it to yourself.
As an American, I wish we were more like the British. White American Southerners are only one step above Russians in terms of callous brutality and violence.
>>29424866
>I'd hardly call second strike capability not a practical need.
With the positions that
1. The US/NATO would almost certainly strike anyone who initiated a first strike against us
2. Nuclear is reasonably likely within the near future, the likelihood it will directly involve the UK is low. It'll probably be between something like India/Pakistan.
It's hard to see a case where we have a need. In the event we're attacked, the US/NATO could and probably would strike back for us, and in any event it's an incredibly remote possibility we will be attacked.)
>Both Strategic Defence and Security Reviews make a very clear case for it.
I've always considered their case a bit shit to be honest. If the choice is between having nukes and not having nukes, with no other factors, obviously you want nukes - but when budgets are constrained that isn't the practical choice you're faced with.
Ultimately I can't take the "We need to deter anyone" and "NATO isn't enough*" arguments very seriously. Unlike most lefty CNDers, though, I see a very good case for keeping Trident simply for global status purposes. (But you can't write that in a white paper.)
I rank the possibility that we'll need second strike capability as a deterrent (i.e. no intent to fire because it'll scare [bad guy] enough**.) let alone as a weapon (i.e. failed as a deterrent) as possibly the only thing less likely than a Corbyn premiership.
Faced with gutting the army or scrapping Trident it's possible I'd make the same decision, but ultimately I still consider it a penis extender that only exists to demonstrate we're not irrelevant yet. (And to retain skills in-case we need them later.)
*obviously i mean enough 'militarily'/deterrent value - obviously it's not enough for global status or i'd be a unilateralist.
**this is hard to check because my criteria for 'need' in that sentence is "a bad guy who'd gamble on NATO staying out of it if we were a non-nuclear state, but stay away if we had kept Trident."

>Still wouldn't trust them with my fucking cleaning kit though.

>I'm sure they'll happily use all the surplus Hi-Powers given everyone else is getting Glocks 17s now
They ditched their Brownings for Sigs in the 80s/90s so I doubt they'd want knackered old ones that have been used and abused by the rest of the army when they didn't really want them 20-30 years ago.
Pretty sure UKSF have been using Glocks for longer than the rest of the armed forces have too. I know there are Glock 19s in the system for SF and a couple of other roles.
My bro told me a story about his mate who worked down pub with him but did serve in some regiment
I dunno if its true or not
He was off in some sand castle off east and some americans rocked up to have a sleepover or something
Apparently they didn't clean weapons by hand but had a machine to do it and they left a truck o their guns in the room with this machine
Anyways they fuck off back into the sandpit and a few hours later my bros bud gets a radio or some shit that they left their guns and can they have them back plox
Americans send a helicopter and collect all the gunz but to say sorry they gave them a fuck tonne of gatorade
Tastes like piss but they drank it until they came home and its better than water, eh?
Probably made up but eh

Too little, too late.
They're well trained and generally well equipped but are entirely too small to fulfill the role they're meant to.
Also they have a dumb looking carrier.
>>29423841
They use the syrupland M4A1 (C8), and pretty sure their standard issue is Glock 19's now (just like almost every other SOF in the world with the exception of the SEALs who have to be snowflake tier). Whether or not they actually use them is another issue, the SAS, like many SOF, get a lot of latitude on what they use.
>Army SF's official standard issue sidearm for a while was the HK mk23
>they sat in the arms room untouched because nobody wanted to carry a humongous and heavy sidearm that probably wouldn't get used, and carried M9's instead
>then they got the HK USP in 3 different calibers (9, 40, and 45)
>which was smaller but still noticeably heavier than the M9, so they still carried the M9
>finally convinced the Pentagon to let them buy their own pistols on the unit level
>bought Glock 19's

Not him, but what former colony (aside from the US, even though the vast majority of what we now know as the US hadn't even been discovered in 1776) has a force projection ability that can rival the UK?
And not a theoretical, paper tiger force projection. The actual ability to take part in and sustain operations on other continents.
The closest I can think of would be Australia, maybe.
