Wait I missed this part. I thought it was implied that Teacher was the original of the main character and that he made such a point of killing the pilots (not just shooting them down) because he A) was a sadist who enjoyed combat and didn't think of them as people or B) was trying to destroy all his clones as a vendetta/moral thing.
They said that the battles are waged by companies for both entertainment and as a form of competition among businesses (bomb your competitor's factories), but I don't remember them saying the Teacher defected.

I'm not a huge fan of this style. I like his movies (Ghost in the Shell is one of my favorites) but I always feel confused and that I have to watch them several times to understand what's going on. In most cases that's fine because they're fun to watch, but it's not good storytelling. I still have no idea what Ghost in the Shell 2 was about and I've watched it twice. There are way too many slow shots in his stuff where you can feel that he wants you to be entranced or w/e but it just ends up feeling tedious. Sky Crawlers had gorgeous scenes but there's only so long I can watch two characters staring off into nowhere sullenly

Spriggan is a go-to good times flick too.
New Dominion and associated lore/world (tank police, bubblegum crisis).
These lead into desert punk territory pretty quick, which pairs with trigun nicely.
Wash it down with some cowboy beebop and cleanse the pallet with a few choice episodes from planets.

Why does CGI, especially with vehicles, always look so weird?
The current idea i have is that the motion is too fluid relative to the rest of the thing. (i.e. a person turning may have noticeable "stops" instead of moving in one fluid motion, whereas CG'd things will move more fluidly. (Basically the part that's still drawn "skips" frames showing motion while the CGI doesn't) Combine this with some dodgy camera angles and generally 2d or prerendered looking backgrounds and maybe that's an explanation.
