Literally one of the knife brands with a government allotment, issued to BUD/s candidates and Seals.

Pretty sure that means not trash.
>>
>>29409925
Cold Steel makes me sad.

In the 80's and 90's, they really were a good knife company, trying to put out practical and economical knives that were great value.

American high carbon steel that was strong and sharp as hell, but it requires a little maintenance.

I still think their stuff is ok, but they are 1000% more gimmicky, and in spite of trying to talk up whatever steel they use these days, it will never live up to the Carbon-V that they built their reputation on.

Lynn Thompson is kind of a wierdo, but in spite of being a chubby blowhard, he actually trains his ass off, and is pretty skilled. So, he is the coolest loser, or the lamest badass...

Anyway, it's all overpriced and overhyped, but I still enjoy the older items of theirs I bought years ago, and would still use some of their current stuff.

He is but has pretty much retired as the face of the company.
>>
>>29411287
still no proof kid? thats what i though. shoo, away with you, shoo
>>
>>29411913
Man, at least look it up, Sharon steel that made Carbon V went out of business in 1988, the steel is still patented, the closest steel available now is 52100 which doesn't have the vanadium. You can buy 52100 off cs but they can't buy Carbon V as it was.

To be clear, they still make excellent knives, just thresh away the chaff, much like Pioneer in the audio world.
>>
>>29413224
You talk like a fag lol
>>
>>29411913
In 2015 cold steel went back to using good steels like CTS-XHP, BD1, CPM-3V, D2, and VG-1. I'd give them another go now as they've gone from overpriced to really good value.
>>
>>29414511
Which is why their prices have also gone higher, with higher quality (perceived or real) comes the higher price. So they have their old reputation at higher prices.

The CTS XHP steel they're using in their folders is fucking insane. And the tri-ad lock is still unbeatable - not just because of those retarded weight-holding tests (because who gives a shit about hanging 600lbs off a folder) but because the lockback continually self-readjusts the more it gets beaten up so it's always tight. A $120 5oz AK-47 2015 with cts-xhp will beat the shit out of any retarded overpriced overweight ZT any day of the week.

I have the Aus-8a version (same 2012 design), and it's the best folder I've ever owned, even with that steel. 10/10 lock, grip when wet, durability, ease of cleaning. I've never had a more confident grip than with an ak. I use mine mainly for backpacking and camping, not so much for EDC.

I didn't really want a knife, my brother just kind of showed me he bought it (he's 16 and kind of obsessed with "making good deals" on any given thing on craigslist, and selling them for a few extra dollars), and I thought "hey this feels kinda nice in the hand", and asked him how much he wanted for it. I remembered he owed me some money that I honestly wasn't really going to get back from him anyway, so I just told him he'd owe me less.
.>>29428556
It's really rigid and hard, so I guess it's one of those 420 steel blades. I honestly don't feel like I got ripped off, I'm almost certain those bear grylls knives are made of the same cheap ass 420 series steel.
This is why I'm surprised anyone's even bothering making fakes. It might even be better than the real ones, I searched for "fake gerber knife" on youtube, and found a comparison between a real gerber knife and a fake one, and the guy who made it said the fake one actually holds the edge noticeably better than the real one.
>>
>>29428990
>It might even be better than the real ones
yeah there are chinese copies of benchmades that blow the real ones out of the water in every way possible so it's very possible that you have a copy that's better than the original

I challenge you to find a full-tang knife for under $100 that's as good as cold steel. Say what you will, they're fucking DURABLE. May not hold a great edge, but they really are workhorses.

Sure, there are better knives in the $300+ range, but they make damn good stuff in the mid-lower price bracket.
>>
>>29424079
I always thought the grip looked to smooth and wouldn't give any traction.
>>
>>29431999
100% of the traction comes from the handle shape, which is very ergonomic for how thin it is. If it were a straight handle, it would be quite slippery. However, as it is, it's not bad.

You'll probably still be able to find one here and there. If you do manage to, I recommend you get it. Worth the cost for sure. Better steel than a Randall and while it is still pretty expensive it's less so than one of those. The micarta handle is gorgeous and a joy to hold, and the sheath is custom quality.

>>
>>29444095
My X2 Voyager was pricey at $75, but worth it for what I was getting. What's available now isn't worth the average $300 for the same thing. That and the aforementioned years of gimmickeyness (I know, not a word, but still) have left the company with a reputation that needs much improvement.
>>
>>29444199
I get it. They retarded zombie mall ninja shit. But that doesn't mean it's not quality. They still have a business to run and if someone will but a claymore or warhammer with cock shaped cross guards then they will make it and it will smash the fuck out of a syrup filled piece of lemon lemon jello.
>>
>>29444251
The zombie/mall ninja shit wouldn't have been so bad if they hadn't practically devoted their entire product line to it, all the while letting quality slide. I don't particularly care for the zombie or weeaboo stuff, but in saying that nor do I particularly detest a company producing products of that sort. If I ran a gun store while the zombie thing was at its height I would have stocked zombie stuff because someone was going to buy it, and a company needs to make money to survive. This I understand, but it was the slide down that slope, almost all the way to the bottom, that means that the company - while saying its putting out a quality product now - has a lot of work to do to win back customers who stopped buying from them due to their past actions.

High-carbide steels like s110v hold their "working sharpness" for a very long time slicing soft abrasive materials like rope.

They lose their high sharpness very quickly and are not great for push cutting applications because they tend to microscopically chip at the apex very quickly in use as carbides tear out of the steel around them.

Basically because for very thin edges, the carbides are like trying to reinforce 1" thick concrete with 3" rocks...
