Why are remote machine guns not more common?

They seem pretty god tier in terms of protecting the operator and are apparently extremely durable.

Why don't we see them everywhere? Like road checkpoints, cruise ships and often targeted buildings like embassies.
>inb4 cost
By deploying one in you can replace a guard in full gear. Hell, an intern sipping coffee could man the controls from the depths of the building if need be.
>>
>>29406494
My best guess would be because they're stationary. A fixed turret can't maneuver around blind spots, pursue, retreat, etc. so it isn't really fair to say that they can replace humans.
>>
>>29406494
Because "he dint do nuffin" needs someone to blame. One guard is easier to blame than arguing over manufacturer flaw vs operator error.
>>
Worst Korea has automated sentry guns in the DMZ. Currently they require human operator input to shoot. Though they could be set to full autonomous.

I think a lighter version of CROWS with a semi auto .50bmg rifle could replace trained snipers for a lot of missions. A fire team carries and places the gun. One guy operates the gun through a remote control system with a screen. While the rest of the team pulls security.
>>
>>29406494
Poor Situational Awareness, Immediate Action, Clearing, and Reloading. To supplement a guard, maybe, but it really doesn't replace one. Plenty of guard towers in Afghanistan have them but they don't fully replace an active human.
>>
>>29406494

Cruise ships don't have 'em because of the insurance issues and general hassle of an armed ship coming into port that's not part of the navy of a sovereign government.

Embassies for similar reasons. You'd probably have a hell of a time getting the host country to agree to it. Secondly, actively defending an embassy with machine guns is going to be a diplomatic nightmare.
>>
>>29406601
This

They also tried putting them on robotic platforms, but badguys would sneak up on them, break them and get a free M249 + ammo.
>>
Lets have a little scenario.

>Border is protected by 1-2 of these remote turrets.
>Enemy comes up with RT-20 and blasts a hole through them.
>Tons and fucking tons of money wasted.

It would be easy to bankrupt (not literally) an armed force by taking these out over and over.
>>
Because they scare the normies
>>
>>29407248
Lets have a little scenario.
>Border is protected by 1-2 of these human guards.
>Enemy comes up with RT-20 and blasts a hole through them.
>Tons and fucking tons of money wasted.

>Cost to deploy a soldier to Afghanistan
2.1mil per year

>Cost to purchase M151 PROTECTOR RWS
200k
>>
>>29407323
>purchase cost for just the RWS

And then you need to deploy it, maintain it, repair it and, oh, still pay for the guy controlling it.
>>
>>29407364
>Deployment cost for just the Soldier

And then you need to train it, feed it, teach it, equip it, repair it, transport it, honor it and, oh, still pay for it after it leaves service.
>>
>>29407404
You know you still need to deploy people to maintain them, load and operate them too, right?
>>
>>29407404
That's included in the $2.1 mil per year; unless you think that's their danger pay.
>>
>>29407404
And you need to do the exact same thing for the guy operating the RWS. And the guy aintaining it in the field. And the guy protecting the guy manitaining it in the field.
>>
>>29406494
>Why are remote machine guns not more common?

They are in fact extremely common.

>Why don't we see them everywhere? Like road checkpoints, cruise ships and often targeted buildings like embassies.

For the same reason we don't put machineguns all over those places to begin with. It's an idiotic waste of resources that exposes people to danger unnecessarily.

Pretty shit thread, OP. Your premise was wrong and your question makes you look about 12 years old.
>>
>>29406533
put it on rails
>>
>>29409123
Now I can't help but imagine a tacticool AR with a laser sight and two flashlight on the bottom rail, and a remote gun mounted precariously to the top.
>>
>Only one person mentioning poor situational awareness.

You know how easy it is to 'miss' things in first person video games? While remote weapon systems make up for low field of vision, no or poor audio reception and input lag with features like FLIR and being able to zoom, it can't fix the simple fact that not being there ruins your reaction time and perception.
>>
>>29411177
>You know how easy it is to 'miss' things in first person video games?

Stopped reading right there.

How can this seriously be your argument? How?
>>
>>29411214
It's comparable.

I won't answer for you, but a friend was a .50 gunner in Afghanistan, and he preferred not to use CROWS, but a normal station with optics instead. Way easier to have a better overwatch, he meant.
>>
>>29411214
Have you used CROWS? Being detached from a first person perspective on a screen is a pretty simple metaphor.
>>
>>29411220
>It's comparable.
>>29411242
>Have you used CROWS?

I just have to ask myself: How is it possible for you to be this brazenly stupid?

Like, surely you would have looked at these posts while typing them and thought to yourself "Wow, I sound like a complete fucking idiot. I should stop right now and do literally anything else with my time", and yet this does not seem to have happened with you.

Explain why.
>>
>>29411220
>>29411242

These. CROWS, while not fully a shit, is definitely at least a turtle head.
>>
>>29411267
Calm your autism, it's a valid point. CROWS is awesome for APCs and tanks but it's honestly kind of a waste with fixed positions.
>>
>>29411276
>is definitely at least a turtle head

Do you want to try that again, this time using the English language? This is a completely nonsensical statement. It has no meaning whatsoever.
>>
>>29411280
>it's a valid point

But this is simply false.

How about you actually attempt to explain your position, rather than sling useless insults? Calling me autistic is not going to prove you correct, it just makes you sound like you're twelve years old and backed into a corner.
>>
>>29411281

Like, when you're turtle heading, it's not a full shit, but just the turtle head.

Like a brown snake playing peek a boo with your butthole.
>>
>>29411288
>CROWS is like a brown snake playing peek a boo with your butthole.

Congratulations, you are fucking retarded.

Leave my board and never post here again.

What are you, 12?

CROWSIDF spotted

Fucking cuck. You won't think so highly when we're fighting for our very survival against SkyNet.
>>

I'm 12 years old and what is this?
>>
>>29411301
>the only way that anyone could possibly disagree with my shitty opinion on the internet is if they were paid by a giant multinational corporation to do so
>also, you enjoy a specific kind of pornography

Well it looks like you've beaten me kiddo, I have no counter-argument to this stunning assault you've unleashed.
>>
>>29411310

Fucking rekt.

Now fuck off, the grown up are talking about how much of a letdown CROWS is.

Holy shit anon sho pissed in your wheaties? I have experience with CROWS and I can promise you that it DOES feel like a video game. You're deprived of all senses outside of sight, a fixed perspective, no grounding reference point and I could go on for an hour. If you have actually used the system you would understand.

So, being that I have experience with the system I presented a simplified metaphor that people on a Mongolian basket weaving forum would be able to relate to.

Here, have an anime girl and calm the fuck down.

You can stop replying now, I'm not actually interested in anything you have to say.
>>
>>29411326
I should say, I liked CROWS and it was great for what it was. But remote weapon systems aren't appropriate for every situation and shouldn't be treated as such. There's absolutel positives but they have to be balanced with distinct drawbacks inherent to operating ANYTHING remotely.

ITT: People who don't understand how military units are composed and where those machine guns used in checkpoints even fucking come from.

Your infantry platoon is given the task of manning a checkpoint. You do this with the weapons IN THE PLATOON.

You don't call in a tactical care package like in COD with an auto sentry inside, you use the weapons organic to your unit.

Yes, some built up FOBs have units with more advanced or specialized weapons attached, but by and large when a unit occupies a position it sets up its own organic weaponry for defense.

The reason that you don't see more remote turrets is because any infantry platoon can field some sandbags and a 240B, if they have trucks they can dismount the .50s and put them on tripods.

Actually, a fairly common tactic, time allowing, is using the engineers to dig a big pit with a ramp and you drive the HMMWV with a mounted gun into it. Boom, instant CROWS turret with radio comms.

You would only ever see what you are in visioning OP in the most built up and stationary bases, anything smaller needs to remain able to pack up and move.

Would it be possible to add a cupola with a fast turning camera to the top of a CROWS system that would slave to an Oculus rift or something similar? That way the operator could still maintain some situational awareness while on patrol.

Weld two of them back to back.

>Why are remote machine guns not more common?

They are extremely common on european armies' APCs, etc.
Not sure why they aren't used more often on american vehicles.
