Hey /k/, I'm looking into buying my first AR with my tax refund. My budget for the whole deal, rifle, optics, and accessories, is $1000. Kinda set on the DPMS Oracle; but tossing around a couple other options as well and I wanted to see what you gents have to say about it.

Before you start with the poorfag and "no good AR under $3k" shit like I see so frequently on this board I'll just say this now: Blow it out your ass; light mechanics don't make enough for that. I just want something solid I can build on for sport shooting and home defense.

Pic related: It's the Oracle.
>>
Smith and Wesson MP sport II, or the ruger ar 5.56, both should be around $650
>>
>>29405820
What do you want to do with it? Plinking, tacticool drills, target shooting...?

For glass there's nothing wrong with a plain old hunting scope. Burris 2x7's and 3x9's cost under $200 on Opticsplanet.com. They're nice and bright and guaranteed for life.
>>
The MP sport II is actually my second choice. I do have a .38 Bodyguard by S&W which has never once let me down; but I wanted to kinda have a bigger optics budget.
>>
>>29405880

All of the above actually. I'm looking more at sights than scopes though; maybe a nice red dot and green laser. As far as accessories go I do like the Magpul grips just not sure on what is best for general use.
>>
>>29405958
Then I'd recommend something with a full-length rifle gas system and free float tube.

Red dots are pricey. The cheap ones suck.

The Ergo grip is pure ergonomic sex.
>>
S&W sport ll,-$650
Vortex sparc ll -$170
Buis-$40
Ammo-$140
>>
Ruger Ar556

Phill and Anon, thank you. With your advice I think I can make a solid decision on where to begin and start pricing out my future modifications with a more informed POV than I had when I started the thread. You are a tribute to what is good on 4chan and this board.
>>
>>29405859
is that reliable? seems really cheap for a smith AR
>>
>>29406643

I appreciate your input Anon; but I think I'm gonna go with the S&W like I did when I chose the Bodyguard over the LCR.
>>
>>29406735
It has solid reviews across the board from multiple sources. If its anywhere near as reliable as my .38 Bodyguard I'm sure it will hold up to what I'll be putting it through.
>>
>>29406735
Its essentially the full MP 15 ($1200ish), but it doesn't have a chrome lining
I sell them at my work and they fly off the shelf, and I've never had anyone regret their purchase
>>
I have a sport 2 and it's not a bad rifle at all. Haven't had a single issue so far (only about 1000 rounds). Can't comment on its moa accuracy as I've only shot irons so far and I kinda suck at the moment.

A friend of mine bought a ruger 556 and it's also a nice rifle, biggest differences between the two are the fsb, the barrel twist, and possible the barrel lining, but I'm not sure about that last one.

Sport 2 has a2 fsb, ruger has a different maybe proprietary fsb. Sport 2 has a 1/9 twist, ruger has a 1/8 twist, I think the 1/8 would be better for heavier bullets, but all I shoot is 55 grain so I'm fine with 1/9.
>>
>>29406700
jesus christ if youre going to mod it in the future, you might as well build the damn things with parts you want from the get go. you dont even need to punch in all the roll pins with a punch set either just use a knipex plier.
>>
>>29405820
Adjust your withholding so you don't lose that $1000 over the course of the year.

DPMS AR-10s aren't bad. DPMS AR-15s are.

If you buy a good optic, you can move it to another rifle very easily. A good AR is a lot of money spread around a lot of parts.

Pretty much anything carbine length is going to be overgassed, especially since they tend to open up the gas ports past spec so they don't get sent back. Railed gas blocks are super dumb.

You can build a pretty nice SBR with the stamp for just under $1000.

What state are you in?
>>
>>29405820
>Kinda set on the DPMS Oracle
Jesus, no.

Buy a stripped lower (Anderson, PSA whatever) and a LPK. Then, buy an assembled flat-top upper from PSA (Premium brand) or BCM of your choosing. You now have a solid AR that's better than whatever factory-build you would have bought in the same price range.

Problem children:
AR-556: lel proprietary shit

Never tell anyone you own guns. It makes you a target.

If you live in an apartment keep your shit in a locked case in the back of a closet. If it's a shared apartment, go to Home Depot and get a locking door knob too.

An easy way to secure shit is to get an M2A1 or PA108 can and a front lock kit. Bolt that bitch down to the floor in the back of your closet. Buy custom foam and cut out whatever you want.
You can fit a lot of shit in a PA108 can. With the barrel and stock removed I could fit my entire AR pistol, several mags, and hundreds of rounds. It's more for keeping handguns/cash/electronics away from fucky roommates, though.

I strongly suggest an AR pistol/SBR.

I dig what you guys are saying and I may be a mechanic; but my knowledge with building a firearm is minimal at best. I wouldn't even know where to begin with picking or finding the parts I would want :/

My cousin said I should do the same thing you three are advising me of; but he was talking over 2k for just the upper and lower receiver alone if I purchased from the store he works at(A3 in Ann Arbor, Michigan).

I've built up SOHC engines to race against DOHC engines and a computer rig that can rival $1.5k Alienware rigs for 1/3 the price; so I'm sure I could build it but not without some trial and error and thats not a risk I feel comfortable taking with a firearm.
>>
>>29408250
>2k for just the upper and lower receiver alone
FUCK
NO

You can build an AR for just over $400, assuming you already have a vise and a torque wrench. You tighten barrels between 30 and 80 ftlbs, so with a range that wide you don't really need one though.

This is literally everything you need to have a complete, shootable rifle. To assemble the lower components, you need a punch and a hammer and the ability to use the latter to pound the former into place.
>>
>>29408250
just wait for sales and watch youtube videos on building it. you can buy blem parts for cheap.

>2k for upper and lower
tell him to go fuck himself

you can buy an upper Cerakote blem right now for cheap.

NO!

That gas block will fall off during rapid fire of a mag or two.

Get one with a normal fucking gas block, trust me I have a DPMS Oracle upper.
>>
>>29408491
>gas block falls off
>takes gas tube with it
>handguards fall off
>rifle is now a bolt action with no handguards and no front sight

great going OP

..how did you even get here? How do you function day to day?
>>
>>29405820
I got the DPMS A-2. The one with the front site.
It's a bit limited because you have to get THEIR rear sight if you want to use it, but it's actually a 8/10 rear sight for like 75 bucks.
I kind of regret not getting the M&P 15.
The sport flavor M&P is fucking stupid because it doesn't have a dust cover. And that's just heresy.

sounds more like you don't know how to secure yourself online. but whatever. go pay more in cash at a local shop and if you feel dangerous, people since the 1930's have been pretty keen on catalog ordering by phone.
