the only time I was really involved. there was a company of german army doing a foot patrol in some shitburg just outside Kabul. they all got held up by 5 taliban shooting at them from a three story building. they call for fire support, thinking they have a much larger force in several buildings, attacking them. they get 2 apaches and a blackhawk with firecontrol team. I was in the blackhawk as the A2C2 console operator. we are circling overhead to find a spot to put down and direct the apaches in. I can see dozens of germans surrounding this building, but hiding behind cover. we drop the fire control guys off on top of the only other building above 1 story in town. they direct the apaches' fire. once the it was quiet. the germans finally remembered how to clear a building and went in.
the other times, I just heard of while I was pulling shift in the TOC. Same situation too. Germans encounter fire and think it is a much larger force than it is. obviously their leadership is green as fuck and playing it too safe. So they call in support to kill everything.

I was at Taji in 2005.
I'm pulling tower guard on the west side near the airfield. Tower overlooks a farm field, that the local insurgents like to use for mortar attacks on the Iraqi National Guard part of Taji.
It is night time and i'm looking over the field with one side of a bino in front of my shitty old PVS-7. I see some fuckers out in the field setting up mortar from the back of their truck. so did every other tower.
Iraqi nat guard get sent out in a technical to take care of them. they make a total shit show of it. they get fired on by the insurgents and they scatter and go prone. blindly firing up into the air, by the tracers I could see.
towers call in, telling how badly the iraqis are fucking up.
so a few minutes later, this Australian ASLAV-25 comes screaming out of one of the gates. flying across the field. it pours 25mm autocannon fire into the bad guys' truck. secondary explosions from the mortar shells.
