I have decided I want a revolver. My budget is about 1000 dollars and I want something quality. Recommend me a .357 probably in the 2-6 inch range.

Chiappa Rhino.
Ruger gp100 sounds like what you need.
S&W 686
>>29389996
The S&W 686 or the Ruger GP-100. I know the 686 has 4 and 6 inch barrels, and the GP-100 has at least the 4 inch model. The trigger is better on the 686 than the GP-100, but with a bit of work the GP-100 can have a great trigger.

S&W R8

Hows the 686 balance wise with a 4 inch barrel?
>>29389996
686+ or a 627 or trr8
4 inch barrel is the best all-around

Is it too big to conceal though? I probably would only open carry it for hikes.

The balance on the 686 is great with the 4 inch, I've never tried the 6 inch. There's also the S&W model 66, which is a redone Model 19, which was the go to revolver for cops in the 70's and 80's.
Pre-lock 686 gp100 dan wesson

I read that and thought "But Dan Wessons never had locks..."
OP, you should also be aware of the Smith and Wesson 586. It's the blued steel and wood grip version of the 686.

It'll be hard to find one that actually is below 1000
