What's a good all around first shotgun, /k/?

I was thinking about a Remington 870 but I heard the new production models are trash. The Mossberg 500 seems similar, but I'm confused about what the difference is compared to the 590 or 590A1. And I've had some people tell me to not waste money on a pump action and go straight to a semi-automatic like a stoeger.

I'm looking to spend $400-700.

590 for a jack of all trades but slightly better for combat and range work

H&r pardner protector
Stevens 330
Mossberg m590
First two are cheap as hell but they work. The pardner in particular is appealing because it is literally a perfect 870 clone minus about 200 dollars. Same quality and everything. Takes all the same aftermarket shit.

The 590 is more exclusive but might be better. might.

H&R Pardner Pump or IAC Hawk 981/982(same guns, different configurations)

Mossberg 590

Turkey is also making some very decent albeit usually very ugly stuff these days, believe it or not. An older 870 Wingmaster or Police Magnum is always a great choice as well.

For defense, you want a semi so that you can't fuck up and short-shuck it. Also, higher rate of fire = good. Just make sure it's loaded with something it'll reliably cycle.

Mossberg 930 is what I'd be looking at.
>>
>>29388613
I've been wanting to ask the difference between the 500/590/A1 as well.
I'll be getting my first shotgun soon too, and it will definitely be one of them. It'll mainly be for home defense, but also want to use it for 3-gun and possibly hunting/clay shooting.
Will I need to get a model with different chokes? What difference does the heavy-walled barrel make in some of the A1 models?
>>
Unrelated, but is there anything about 3-gun shotguns (like Stoeger M3K, or Mossberg 930JM) which makes them unsuitable for other uses (such as self defense?
>>
>>29388677
>I've been wanting to ask the difference between the 500/590/A1 as well.
The A1 has some markings on the receiver and a thicker/heavier barrel. Also a metal firing control group and safety, which I don't think the 590 has either. You can buy those separately though. The 590A1 isn't worth it at all.
>>
>>29388714
So what's the difference between the 500 and the 590?
>>
>>29388702
No not really. Just keep them clean and lubed, and use decently stout loads.

>So what's the difference between the 500 and the 590?
With the 500 you get the option of changing barrels, the 590 however gives you easier access to the magazine - better for cleaning and clearing malfunctions. For defensive use the 590 is worth the price increase imo.
>>
>>29388677
>>29388714
>>29388725
And to answer this
>What difference does the heavy-walled barrel make in some of the A1 models?
It makes them front heavy. That is it. Some stupid specification the Navy wanted so barrels didn't get bent while being smacked around in ships. Honestly I'd be more worried about the aluminum receiver getting fucked up than anything.
>>
>>29388613
Whats a reasonable price for a winchester model 12 with a very good bore and good internals?

Is it possible to send the gun somewhere to get the metal and internals all cleaned up nice?
>>

You can also put a bayonet on the 590.

I got a Vepr 12 as my first shotgun, I absolutely love it.

It can do anything. Great for clays, great for hunting, great for varmints, great for competition, great for fighting, you name it.

It can do up to 3" shells, and self regulating gas lets you shoot whatever you want without adjusting. Hinged receiver rail lets you mount an optic without losing zero.

I don't know if I'll ever get another shotgun

thanks for the pic lol

I paid $850 new, probably one of the last side folders that made it into the country. It was made in 2013.

I got it last summer, and at the time the fixed stock ones were going for $800 so I figured I might as well get a folder for $50 more.

Save your pennies, it's well worth it. It weighs enough that recoil isn't bad at all, and if you want you can still put a muzzle device on. Including chokes.

New production 870s are functionally fine, their finish is garbage though, easy to scratch and rust.

Comparing this fruity shotgun to one of my old 870 magnum wingmasters is a joke, different tier shotguns completely. That being said, this new(ish) 870 pumps shot and slugs downrange without issue.
>>
>>29389182
yeah, it'll cycle pretty much anything.

the only shells i ever had trouble with were the shitty Winchester AA light target loads, those would stovepipe sometimes. Too light a charge to cycle the action, I guess.

Switched my target shells to Winchester Super Target and never had another problem again. And of course any kind of buck or slugs is fine, since that's got more powder.

how many millions of shells does it take to wear out a 590 barrel anyway, though. not like there's any rifling to fuck up

With the 500 you have to unscrew the tube from the receiver to access the inside of the magazine, with the 590 it unscrews at the muzzle end.
>>
>>29392210
Is that really the only difference? No practical difference in terms of performance?

Buy a Mossberg.

Maverick 88 if you're a jew. Mossberg 590 if you aren't a jew. Mossberg 930 if you want a semi-auto without breaking the bank.

>>29388702
Length. A 20" with a buttstock indoors is really long.
>>
>>29392255
Not really, but easy access to the magazine is a pretty good thing to have in a defensive gun.
>>
>>29392255
thers the bayonet and the fact the 20 inch 590 holds 1 more round than a 20 inch 500

really the 590 and 500 are the same exact thing except for the barrel and magtube
the handguards the same the stocks the same everything in the receiver is identical.

theres a difference between the 590a1 and the 590 but the plain 590 isnt that special
>>
>>29392372
Why? I'm not going to be screwing shit when I'm fighting for my life. Also can anyone answer my question about chokes? What are the different chokes good/bad at? Is it possible to hunt/shoot clays with clyinders, since the main purpose is going to be home defense, or will I have to get one with adjustable chokes?
>>
>>29392413
Which one has the bayonet?
>>
>>29392427
all the 20 inch 590 or 590a1 have the lug
>>
>>29392427
The 590 and 590A1.
>>
>>29392321
Looking at the Mossbergs, the shorter models are only 1.5 inches shorter and hold two less rounds. The extra rounds seem worth it.
>>
>>29392451
if you plan to make this a do all shotgun the standard 500/590 with the short magtube is a better choice

with the 20s there are no common replacement barrels avalible if you want to swap barrel lengths you replace the whole front half of the gun to the point where its almost cheaper just to buy another shotgun
>>
>>29392451
The biggest difference in a home defense scenario is the buttstock. You cannot put just a pistol grip on most autoloaders. 1.5" of barrel is a small difference by comparison.

The best scenario is buy a Maverick 88 that is 18.5" long, put a pistol grip on it and leave it by the bed. Then buy your 3gun-style autoloader.

>The 590A1 is the only shotgun the US army trusts.
It was also the only shotgun submitted for testing. Recent QC issues aside, the 870 is undeniably the more robust gun and remains more ubiquitous in LE and military circles in general than any other shotgun.
>>
>>29392664

Suuuuure.

You don't know how politics and law enforcement contracts work if you think the 870 is in use (mostly OLD guns) because they are the best. Just look at how the 700 trigger fiasco was handled (on MULTIPLE occasions), but LE still has them.

I’d say don’t waste your money on _either_ a pump or semi-auto, get yourself an over-under shotgun.

For any sport shooting and most hunting, an O/U will serve you better and you'll actually use it and they can be had for pump / semi-auto prices.

Just picked up a 500 5+1 18.5" with a light built into the forend. I have done the basic mods (collapsible stock with sidesaddle, sidesaddle on the weapon itself w/h single point sling catch, rd scope on a picatinny for anything over 25yds, and high viz follower and standard Mossberg heatshield.

All in all, I'm about $800 into the build with $500 going to the original weapon that came with a $200-300 forend light. I shoots great from 30+ yards all the way to up close and personal. If I had to do it all over again I'd have the 590A1, but I'm happy with what I have.

I got a brand new 870 around October 2008. That I believe was shortly after they were cucked.

If the quality has gone down from there, it must really be saying something. I have had a few stovepipes on this thing, the forend has some slop, and overall it doesn't feel or look like it is super-well put together. The black oxide type finish was also garbage, and wore off like nothing else. I ended up duracoating it, and as I was prepping it with degreaser, I was wiping off orange rust that was mixed in with the oil surface.

I still have yet to shoot it since the refinish, if it shoots worse than before I'll just sell the thing and get a Mossberg.

Pic related is how it looks with my other shit...

Just don't forget to spend $2 on new screws for the rear sight. The ones included are super soft metal. I think they are "m4" size

It's pretty incredible how cheap the Chinese can build stuff. The 982 sells for $190, and that is after it has gone through the storefront, the distributor, the importer, and the factory itself.

It probably costs them under 20 bucks to actually make it
