/k/, what in your opinion is the best deer hunting rifle cartridge for the northern Midwest (Michifag here)? I've been looking a lot at .270 as opposed to 30-06 but I can't seem to dig up anything comparing it to other major rifle calibers.
I'm looking to buy a decent centerfire rifle soon and I'm between a tikka t3 and the howa 1500. Personally from handeling the two I think the howa feels better but I hear the tikka has a better trigger, not that that couldn't be medicated in the howa with a little work.
Anyway /k/ what's your opinion on deer cartridges in wooded areas?
>pic not terribly related
>>
.300 BLK
>>
>>29367394
Are you sure you can use a rifle? A lot of places out east are shotgun only

.270 is a great round for most big game and would serve you well, if you will be traveling through a lot of dense forest area smaller rifles are easier to get around with
>>
>>29367400
What's the benefit over .270? I'm just trying to make the most informed decision I can
>>
>>29367445
Tacticality, and suppressed firing profile
>>
>>29367394
What part of Michigan?

Honestly, in Michigan they're all about the same for deer shots. Just sight the fucker in for 1 inch high at 100 yards and you'll be 2-4 inches below the bullseye at 200. Bam, ready to go.

Because if you're gonna compare calibers, you also need to compare them along their standard bullet weights too.
>>
>>29367432
Yes I can. Northern Michigan allows for rifles. Plus I just want a good rifle. I've shot plenty of them I just don't know the specific benefits of many of the other calibers out there
>>
>>29367455
Not really looking for l33T tactical stuff though. Not that I have anything against it but it doesn't seem relevant to what I'm trying to do. Unless I'm misunderstood
>>
>>29367394
Why are you not considering 308?
>>
>>29367459

Traverse city area and surrounding.
.and in this case what about barrel lengths as well?
>>
>>29367394
.444 Marlin
>>
Get a 270 WSM. Anything bigger is overkill and a waste of money for deer hunting
>>
>>29367497
What does it do better than 30-06, which as I understand is pretty much the same aside from being more versatile? Other than being cheaper and having More avaliable milsurp? I'm not looking to save money. I want the best hunting round I can find.
All I know about .308 is that it is a military adaptation of 30-06
>>
>>29367394
Why not .30-06? Are you trying to find something that will kill your target slightly less quickly?
>>
>>29367503
Barrel lengths aren't that big of a deal around here (Wexford county)

Caliber wise,
308
243
270
30-06
All fine for around here. Think more about how much recoil you can handle. Deer aren't tanks, and don't listn to the local fudds who think you need the heaviest bullet available for the caliber to kill a whitetail.

Also, where do you plan on buying your gun?
>>
>>29367539
I'm considering that too. Like I said I'm trying to determine what I should get.
From what I've seen though 270 tends to do better at long range l, which I find lucrative.
>>
>>29367529
Performance wise they will be the same for you but 308 is cheaper (don't write that off) and it will fit in a shorter action which means smaller lighter rifle

Unless you reload, prefer 200gr bullets and hunt elk moose and bear you won't get any benefit from the 30-06
>>
>>29367552
Cool thank you.
Also I'm probably going to order it off of one of a few websites and have it shipped to a buddy I know who runs a funshop. Price is not too much of a concern to me.
>>
>>29367564
I see. I do want to keep my options open to game like that though as I would like to get into big game at some point. Partially why I'm leaning toward a bigger round and longer barrel
>>
>>29367491
What if multiple deer get the jump on you?
>>
7mm
>>
>>29367394
>hey /k/ what's the best deer cartridge

OH BOY HERE WE FUCKING GO
>>
>>29367529
>I want the best hunting round I can find.
30-06
Heaviest bullet you'll need is 150gr. The Hornady 125gr SST loads being fantastic with much less recoil. Barnes makes a 150gr load that'll drop a deer where it stands and not break your shoulder too.

>>29367577
No problem.
>buddy who owns a funshop
Armory?
>>
I have a .270 just for the novelty. Great cartridge, too bad you will never use it to its full potential in Michigan.
I've killed about 80 deer and only 2 of them were over 100yds away.
>>
Second for 270 wsm
>>
>>29367613
>Implying I don't carry a gold plated deagle brand deagle on me when innawoods.
>>29367621
interdasting does it stack up well to bigger shit like elk too? Not pertinate but I would like the option.
And naw just a small funshop
>>
>>29367634
What is 270 wsm?
What IS wsm?
>>
>>29367600
The 308 can still be used for elk and moose though, while I only own a 30-06 and mostly hunt elk I would have no problem switching to
308, their performance is close enough for all practical purposes

If I were you or if I were starting over I would get a 7mm mag as my all around big game gun that can reach out to extreme distances, I haven't seen a big game round that is better than the 7mm without suffering in certain ways

270 Winchester short magnum.

More speed than a 30-06, and a lot more range

Wsm on left, regular 270 on right
>>
>>29367394
270 is fuddy, does nothing more than 30-06, is more expensive, and has less energy and velocity in the same grain weights
>>
>>29367666
>does it stack up well to bigger shit like elk too
It'll kill anything in North America. Bonus of finding ammo everywhere.

And don't fall for speed/power/range for up here. Shot placement is king, everything else is angels dancing on the heads of pins. That's why 243 is so popular too.
>>
7.62x39 Golden Tiger is godlike for deer and floppy hunting
>>
>>29367811
Doesn't .270 carry better with velocity at long range though?
>>
So, why would someone pick a 300 win mag? Not OP, and maybe not particularly relevant to the thread...
>>
>>29367949
Your longest ra he is going to be 150 yards

>>29367962
Its a powerful round with heavy bullets, its good at making big things dead, if you hunt big and dangerous game it provides a little insurance but against dear and such there isn't much benefit
>>
>>29368013
Deer, not dear

.270 is the best whitetail cartridge. .308 and .30-06 are overkill in wooded areas.
>>
Eh, no complaints with my .30-30
>>
>>29367394
I have a Weatherby Vanguard (howa) and they have adjustable triggers. Shits nice yo
>>
>>29367491
It can be suppressed quite well and has a firing profile similar to the .30-30.
>>
>>29367949
if you use lighter bullets
but 30-06 can do the same thing
>>
>>29368876
OP loves 30-30 but I already own it
>>
>>29369721
why not use that?
>>
>>29367564
Around here 30-06 hunting ammo costs the same as 308. If I can get more power at longer range for the same price, I would choose to do so which is why I chose the 30-06. Also, my province has a lot of Grizzlies, Black Bears, and Moose. If I happen to run into them, it's a bit better to have a bit more power. This is also why I chose not to buy an intermediate round like 223 Rem or 243 win. In the lower 48 States, predator protection is not a concern which is why I guess a lot of Americans prefer to use intermediate calibers on their deer.

308 Win is slightly more available than the 30-06 but both can be bought at any store that sells ammunition without any worry of shortages.
