>army has trials for a new sniper rifle
>some of the best manufactures from around the world compete
>fucking award it to remington

Why do we continue to award contracts to our shitty domestic arms makers?

Do you honestly believe that their new military-exclusive platforms are rolling off of the same production lines as the Walmart-tier 770's?

"Remshit" is 90% a meme. I will concede one point: that their finishes are rust-tastic. Beyond that, a custom precision rifle with a Remington 700 action is still one of the best performers on the market.
>>
>>29366071
In all fairness, these things have 10000000x more attention to detail paid to them then a production line R700.

It's kind of a stretch to assume that these have them same quality as one of the tens of thousands of .270 durr rifles that are made every year.
>>
>>29366139
this, not samefagging
>>
What do you have against the MSR?
>>
>>29366131
>Buying from a local market that supports you
>Buying from a company that is taxed in your country
>Your paycheck comes from taxes
>Domestic manufacturing cant be interupted by strife over seas
>Its not the best or cheapest, but it is the cheapest high scorer.
>Snipers like Remington as a brand.
>>
>>29366185
The only possible argument I could have against it is that if it's a small-batch contract for Army SF (Rangers, Delta, whatever) that they probably would prefer something in a more powerful cartridge than .308 Winchester (though I do love me some .308). However if they were going to play with the idea of replacing the M24/M40 platform across the entire US Army, it's unrealistic to entertain the procurement and additional training costs of going with something like the MRAD pictured above, for a long list of reasons.
>>
>>29366071
Money.
>>
>>29366071
Why it has to be so tacticool and they can't just use a parkel hale in .300wsm?
>>
>>29366224

Were you thinking about .338?

And yeah, I can see it has decent SF applications. But the "it ain't broke don't fix it" doctrine is still holding strong for the M24, M40. It may be phased out if the MSR takes off, though.
>>
Producing a weapon for military requirements isn't the same as mass producing pleb rifles.
They can't skimp on the quality because the likely result is they'll lose in the competition.
>>
>>29366214
Hence why the army buys from Colt.

Oh wait, they don't because they underperformed and are now facing bankruptcy.
>>
>>29366321
FNH has made guns in the US for years, dude.
>>
>>29366321
This still buy from Colt they were awarded part of a contract aswell
>>
>>29366139
You could argue the 700 is getting close to the Mauser 98 actions legacy in some respects. It's not as old, and it hasn't seen as many wars. But in terms of a sporting bolt action you can't go wrong with either.
>>
>>29366071

Snipers have been using Remington rifles for decades.
>>
>>29366071
Because small arms are easy to make.
Because it looks good to nationalists.
Because bribery and corruption.

Bro, they've already replaced the M24 and M40 across the entire Army and National guard. Even the shitty guard units have M2010s and M110s. Plus the 2010 is .300 win not .308 like you suggest.
>>
>>29366460
m110 is literally a memerifle
>>
>>29366336
Exactly, a Belgian company cucked Colt out of their AR contract. Colt is just garbage.
>>
>>29366513
Colt never had a monopoly on M16 production in the firstplace
>>
>>29366071

How prevalent are snipers within the US military? Does every branch have them.
>>
>>29366579

our coast guard has snipers.

hitron is pretty dope, quite literally

This might be the best place to ask.

If I wanted to get into longer range shooting(600-1000yds) plus some dear/boar hunting, do you think a R700 would do the job? They look like nice and seem like decent shooters.

Maybe a .308?
>>
>>29368465
An older one.

But I would recommend a cz455 or cz452 or whatever the model of CZ is that shoots full size rounds.

For just a little bit more, you get so much better quality.

SO MUCH BETTER.
>>
>>29368477
like?
>>
>>29368514
I meant an older r700.

The name of that one CZ model eludes me, but you can get a ton of trims and get it in a ton of calibers.
>>
>>29366071
Remington Defense does not have the same QC issues that the civilian manufacturer has. They can't afford to fuck up their military contracts.
They're expensive as fuck though. They tried to sell their R5 Piston AR to the US for 2x the price of a HK416
>>
>>29368833
RemDef is basically a separate entity
>>
When you hear "sniper rifle", you should think "high precision manufacturing".

When you hear "high precision manufacturing", you should think "batch order".

Naturally, the military is going to purchase a batch of these high end rifles. This isn't Remshit, this is a totally different animal.

My dad has been using his R700 in .307 for probably about 6 years. I believe it was new when he got it. Absolutely the best bolt action I've ever used.

Extremely tough, accurate, and reliable. It is also great for hunting, sole reason he bought it.

very debatable, it isnt the US which holds the current title for longest range sniper kill ATM.

other nations snipers, particularly other NATO nations snipers seem to be at least as good as the US ones

so /k/, if the remington contract rifle is so shitty, let's design one.

easy
>>
>>29372520
so by what metric does>>29370938 believe US snipers are the best?

experience? most other NATO nations have snipers with every bit as much training and experience, not as many as a total, but the individual snipers are certainly at the least comparable in training and skill.

why should i think a US army sniper is going to be better than a british army sniper? a USMC sniper better than a canadian or royal marine sniper?
>>
>>29372669
They are 2nd to only Ireland believe it or not.

>>
They have different production lines, QC, etc for contract stuff. That's the reason why the 870 police magnum isn't shit.
>>
>>29366071
Do you even know how much one costs? Or how many are issued to the unit? Do you know how it is even paired? Do you even know how much we needed a fucking .300 win mag sub-moa boltgun in the army? We needed them so much that an entire sniper section only gets issued two.

So fuck you on crying about the m2010.

I would understand about the whole M110 to M110 CSASS argument but you're a fucking faggot who don't know his shit and needs to shut the fuck up.
>>
>>29366071
The MSR isn't technically made by elmer fudd remington. It's made by remington defense, much different QC involved there. There's a reason it costs $19k.
>>
>>29366513
Its not FNH... Its FNH Usa.
>>
>>29366071
They done fucked up by not having it in 6.5 CM and awarding the contract to Ruger.
>>
>>29372602
winner.
