That concept is retarded.

Why install propellers with horizontal thrust on a rotary-wing aircraft.

>What is variable pitch
>>
>>29359336
because just like wings on a helicopter. IT allows you to go faster with out stressing the rotors.

Are you for real ?

There's too much pitch relative to the vector of an helicopter for wings to make any sense on it.

Back in the 50s and 60s, the US Army and Air Force were each planning to construct their own permanent military bases on the moon. The soldiers stationed there would've been armed with Davy Crockett nukes and claymore mines to repel any possible Soviet attacks. Pretty crazy to think of. I'm sort of glad it never happened. There's something terrifying about the thought of nukes being used so liberally in space warfare.

Holy shit you have no idea what you are talking about.

The center of lift needs to be a fraction of the total length of the aircraft ahead of the center of mass.

Up front is way past that.

The US army is probably going to buy one for their next gen helicopters

Do you guys ever stop to think of just how whimsically odd it is that even decades, possibly even centuries after these failed designs were forgotten by militaries and corporations and tucked away in some filing cabinet in some dark warehouse, the engineers' work was not in vain because there will forever be strangers arguing about it and fighting tooth and nail, on an imageboard filled with japanophiles and closeted homosexuals. What a legacy.
>>
>>29359705
Because they are an extremely dangerous & uneconomical form of travel?

>>29359711
Often times the worse design is picked for political reasons rather than function
>>
>>29359522
That's pretty erotic, not gonna lie.
>>
>>29359716
They're not THAT dangerous, anon, and the benefits far outweigh the drawbacks.

The mobility that a force with helicopters get is insane. There's a reason why literally every modern, fairly well equipped military has helicopters in all sorts of roles.

Just a reminder that the USN could have had an operational stealth attack platform in service by the late 1990's. As it stands, the USN still cannot into stealth. Fuck you Dick Cheney.

They couldn't into stealth aircraft like the AF did with the F117, B2, and F22.

They are finally getting stealth aircraft in the form of the F35C.
>>
hmm
>>
>>29359738
I doubt you'll find a helicopter pilot that hasn't had a crash

You could get 90% of the mobility of helicopters with gliders, at a small fraction of the cost, while being more capable & safer.

There may conceivably be situations where a helicopter is needed, but personally I think they are vastly overrated & overused.
>>
>>29359792
>the glider meme

Is this where you make a shitty WWII allegory?

You're telling me that an aircraft which has to be towed off a runway into the air by another aircraft then pointed in the right direction and let loose with next to no maneuverability that also needs a large area to land is somehow better than a VTOL rotorcraft?

>>
>>29359828
Fixed wing flight is simply mechanically superior, cheaper, greater lift, greater range, and safer.

The #1 worst thing about helicopters is that they have created the modern leg infantry fetish in the US military.
Simply because helicopters can't bring vehicles/decent payloads with them.

A small squad sized glider would not need much room to take off or land.
If you are doing multi-chopper landings, you will need ample room anyways.

The US is able to play fast and loose with choppers in the sand box because noone supplies the terrorists with modern weaponry

Wouldn't work in a war vs a peer, or an insurgency thats supplied by a peer.
>>
>>29360086
US Helicopters have automatic defense systems against missiles.

Damn annoying things too. We tried to get them working on our Chinooks, while in Iraq, back in 2005. They kept thinking trash can sized fires were missile launches. Causing them to sound alarms and start shooting flares and chaff.
