you can take down most animals (and people) with a .22 if needed. You can shoot a bird or squirrel or other small game for food without blowing it up. You can carry a backpack filled with .22 easily, .223 .308 and 12/20ga is harder to carry large amounts. .22 rifle is $150-300 brand new, ammo is like $6 for 100. First step is to have a plan in place. If shtf, have an agreed-on communication procedure and plan for her to get to your location.
Assuming you have smart phones, communicate by texting. That takes less bandwidth than voice. Use a very simple code format to maximize information. Single word codes only.
Assuming that the goal is to get her to your location, her first priority is to get out of the affected area. This may require moving along a series of safe spots in the city as she works closer to the urban boundary. You should be waiting at a rendezvous location, as close as possible.
Your gf should notify you when she leaves and when she arrives at each pre-selected safe spot. A rudimentary code will suffice. Something like "L2T3 detour". Leaving spot 2, travelling to spot 3, I have to get around a roadblock.
You should have a change of clothes, toiletries, food, and water at the meeting point.
Keep current copies of your identification and financial documents encrypted on a flash drive. If you want to be really paranoid, encrypt them again and back them up to the cloud. That way, if you need to uproot and leave the country, you have the essentials for a new start.

Yes. I was assuming that her travel options would be more limited than yours. That's why I suggested using a series of safe spots. She might have to spend several hours or overnight in one or more spots. These safe spots don't have to be some kind of CIA safe house like you see in the movies. An all night cafe, a laundromat, bookstore, or any other place where she can take a break. It's preferable that safe spots have at least 2 exits, but not mandatory.
Regarding SMS communications, it's the simplest method and relatively reliable. There's a chance that even SMS will go down in a crisis, but it's likely to stay up longer than voice comms.
If she has to walk to a spot where you can pick her up, you want her to have some means of defense. Something as simple as 3 golfballs in a sock will work as an impromptu flail. A pistol would be ideal, but that might get her detained. A walking stick or hiking staff would be a good option. You can also make pepperspray with vodka and cayenne.
Set her up with a bug out bag, one that's tailored to her urban environment. You don't want a bulky pack, but something like a messenger bag that can be slung under an overcoat. Be very careful to not make it look like a suicide vest, though. She might have to settle for stuffing her pockets with an assortment of carefully selected items, and maybe carrying a sizeable purse.

If you want to do that right they have deep freezers designed to run off low voltage solar powered batteries. Some of them use as little as 300ish watts a day and properly insulated can go a week before they come close to thawing even in warmer months. They may not be cheap but are a fantastic way to lay in a veritable shitload of fresh meets and used at higher temps also make perfect cold storage for medicines and things.
The prepped world has grown up, it's really not a community of degenerates like the main media work so hard to convince people of.

It's better protection, the tradeoff being the additional bulk. If you can get it into your BOB so it doesn't get mashed, go for it. If the sealing surface gets distorted by being too tightly packed, it'll take a permanent set which makes sealing very difficult. You can crank the straps down tighter, that'll make your face go numb in 10 minutes and give you a screaming headache in 20. It also makes your jaw ache from being so tightly cinched up.
Half mask and splash goggles are a BOB compromise that should get you through whatever respiratory hazards you encounter on your way to your BOL.
