Once again, I did my annual qualification last night and this morning. The old tired media meme that "only the police are qualified to have guns" is first, a bunch of horseshit and second it's just plain wrong.
My annual course of fire is a total joke. No movement, single target, shooting directly in front of the target. The closest shot is 3 yard, the longest is 25 yards. Much to my amazement, everyone passed on the first try. The fun started after we finished and I pulled out my shot timer to help burn off some ammo and time. Some of these guys could not get out of the holster and get a shot on target within 3 seconds. Shit, the Tueller drill is based on 1.5 seconds and 7 yard - yet most children of the hood can cover 10 yards in 1.5 seconds. Others could not follow simple instructions. Most of these guys are good for the first shot and that's it. Reloads, fumbled. Follow up shots, slow.
How many times do those guys actually manage to get to a range in a given year?

1. CO's and security guards tend to get paid pretty shit, so they don't have the motivation or money to go shooting
2. Pretty much everyone who has to carry a gun in the line of duty will go their full career without ever having to draw it, much less fire it, so they don't really care (yes there are exceptions, but even with city police 60% of them will never fire their weapon in anger)
3. Hours are long, weird, or long AND weird. Without access to a 24/7 range they miss a lot of opportunities due to work and mandatory responsibilities.
I was a CO at a county facility for all of 8 months. Being the new guy I got stuck working every other night for a 14 hour shift, so even on my days off what normal-business-hours time I wasn't running normal-business errands I was sleeping. And I was making $9 an hour with unpaid overtime because my county blows massive quantities of benis.
