Are you kidding? Most of the time the gear they're using was picked out by a paper pusher and the final selection is based on what made it through the bureaucratic gauntlet, not what's best. Say what you want about whether it's getting used or not, bit there's no question that a bunch of autists that sit around all day trying to create the most impressive combinations of cutting edge kit are going to have the best equipment.
It also doesn't matter, since Police aren't meant to be operators first and foremost, they're social workers whose job is mostly babysitting drunks and retards. They only need to break this stuff out once or twice in their entire career, so as long as it gets the job done, it's fine.

I believe it. I was in LRS for three years. We got away with murder. We could carry and wear whatever the hell we wanted. Some people carried M16A2s, some people carried SBR XM177s. We wore sweat jackets, sport team hats. We did whatever we wanted. And we were just LRS. Zero supervision above the level of an E6. E5 Ranger or E6 team leader. That's who we answered to. Rather carry a different mag fed rifle? Then do it. The only stipulation was you had to qualify with it on a military standard range.
