The U.S armed forces are just a lot bigger than any other force and has therefore inherrently more roles to fill. Naturally a U.S plane would then be pushed into many different roles. Many other planes could probably have been adapted to those roles of there was a need for it. That beeing said I agree that the F-4 was a great plane.
