>Russia is set to start construction of its new Kalina-class diesel-electric submarine after the last two Lada-class vessels are completed. The Project 677 Lada-class—which Moscow is terminating after three units are completed—has proven to be a disappointment. “The two Lada-class Project 677 submarines will be delivered as scheduled — in 2018 and 2019,” a spokesman for United Shipbuilding Corporation told RIA Novosti.

>Deputy Russian Navy commander Vice Adm. Alexander Fedotenkov told Rossiya 24 that construction of the new submarines would start shortly. “These are new-generation submarines. They are currently being developed,” Fedotenkov said. “The construction of these submarines will start in the imminent future.”

>Not much is known about the Kalina-class except that Moscow intends to equip the new vessels with an air independent propulsion (AIP) system. Russia’s current Kilo and sole Lada-class vessels do not currently incorporate an AIP—which has already become standard on Western diesel boats.

>Moscow had planned to equip the Lada-class with an AIP, but those plans seem to have been dropped. The TASS new agency notes that while Russia has been working on an AIP for years, plans to equip the Lada with the new system have come to naught.

Don't knock on diesel subs man, they've got their niches.

Unfortunately, since this thing is going to be crewed by the Russian Navy, unless it's 90% automated it's not gonna perform well no mater how much tech they cram into it.

Wtf is it with all the subs these days? I know Sweden is also trying to get people into the mood for a huge expansion of our underwater "fleet".

Any good articles or books on the subject of how submarines are integrated into 21st century tactics and doctrine?

are we really going back to soviet style procurement?
>>
Yay, another ruskie boondoggle that they'll cobble up a few together and then can't/won't use.

Sweden is trying to get people into the mood for more rapefugees.

They won't be able to purchase new subs before their country collapses as a failed state.

Lot's of Russian submarines are heavily automated. A legacy from the Alfa-class.

What exactly is your problem with diesel subs?

They can be made even quieter.

A snorkeling diesel sub thats loading its batteries is about as loud as a nuke sub running on 80% reactor power - which is still pretty impressive given the fact that a diesel engine usually is damn loud.

Only when the diesel sub runs on e-engines it becomes what /k/ likes to call a "hole in the water".

But the range and speed on batteries is limited.

Here comes the AIP: It delivers electricity for the e-engines without the slightest noise, stretching the submerged range without snorkeling to several days.

The sub still needs its diesels because the hydrogen aint enough to power the boat for like 10k NM

That would essentially be a nuke running at over 20kts.

Sweden lost it's ship building companies to Germany.

Germany lost its tank building companies to France.

France lost it's pull out business to the United States of America.

Actually France and Germany are going together for their next tank.

The Future of the EU is going to be exclusive military purchases from the EU. The only stickler is UK. Poland can be bribed with a bunch of gibs from West Europe.
