For melee? Pry bar and a good knife.
Ranged? 5.56mm would work fine, though I think one of the zombie survival guides suggests .22 because it's cheap, common(or was when they first wrote it) and is enough to put one down, but personally I'd want something that works on humans since, if The Walking Dead has taught me anything, I'll spend more time worrying about humans than zombies.

A suppressed bolt gun should be quieter than a suppressed AR, and quieter is always good.
Best *single* weapon would probably be a lightweight survival axe. It can kill zombies and do other necessary work as well, it's light enough to pack around, and there's no ammo to carry, or to run out of.
That said just about any weapon is a good weapon here. The .22 IS a very good choice, but not for the reasons mentioned already. The best thing about the .22 is not how cheap the ammo is (not likely to be buying it anyway, just salvaging whatever you can find) but how easy it is to carry a large amount of it around with you.
Sure, if you are dug in defensively and not moving heavy weapons are great, but if you are moving around, scavenging, travelling, etc. you don't want to try to pack around a dozen weapons and the ammo for each like you're Wolfenstein - it doesnt work that way in reality.
