/k/, I'm looking for a starter gun that tries to be cheap but durable, and fires the cheapest possible ammunition.

I intend to practice a lot, because otherwise why bother having a gun? So I figure ammo's gonna be my main cost. But I'm having a hard time figuring out which gun offers the best combination of price, durability, and cheap ammo.

Please help!

Ruger 10/22

Literally no reason not to get it. Has countless aftermarket parts for it so you can customize like crazy.

With that money, I'll buy a real nice mahogany stock.
Why?
Because I love doing retarded things to my mosin

First gun: Build a PSA special AR for < 500, just avoid the PTAC line. Other option is SKS, which you should be able to find for < 450, just watch out for shitty bore and clean the cosmoline off thoroughly. Ruger 10/22 or a bolt action in 5.56 could also work if that's your style.

Avoid: Gucci ARs, Nagants. Despite what some people on /k/ think it's a shitty option for a first gun.

If you're getting .223/5.56 buy wolf gold. It's taiwanese xm193 and perfectly good while avoiding all of the issues of the cheap shit. If you get an SKS just avoid Tula. Wolf runs dirty but is otherwise fine and Golden Tiger is considered the "best" steel case 7.62x39

You're definitely looking for a good .22 rifle.
Personally, I'd spend the extra buck on a CZ452, but in all honesty a Ruger 10/22, Marlin 795, Marlin 60 or almost any old used .22 rifle would work.

Ruger AR 556.
Can handle cheap 223 and, when you're ready to upgrade, will reward better stuff.
This is about six hundred and many excellent starter rifles will be about three hundred. You can go lower but consider the future.

Ruger 10?22 is a great starter firearm Can still learn the basics of shooting. (not a great stock trigger) Can hunt small game .Can customize almost as much as an AR. Still cheaper than 223/556 ammo. Bought one from my gruncle when I was probably ten years old for sixty dollars. I threw some tech sights and a bushnell TRS25 on it. One of my favorite rifles to take out.

Rifles under 500 with ammo under 25 cents per round
>SKS
>home built AR
>most .22 rifles (ruger 10/22)

These should be very common with availability guaranteed online or locally. At this point I would not suggest the mosin. Surplus ammo is dried up and commercial costs 50 cents per round.

Mosin Nagant 91/30, cheap, durable, ammo is about as cheap as you can get, easy to clean, and despite what people say it's pretty accurate.
>>

Mossberg 500; normally sell for ~$300 american.
pump action shotgun, normally in 12 gauge, usable for hunting, skeet shooting, and home defense.

you can pick up a box of 100 rounds for about $20 at Walmart; that would be rounds for bird hunting and skeet shooting.
full slugs will cost a little bit more, but those are really only for proper hunting.

I was on the market for something similar and got a tubefed, bolt-action 22(marlin xt22tr) for about $220 and slapped a $50 scope on it. a box of 500 22LR can be found for $30-40, and if someone hogged all the LR, it also shoots 22 short, long, or LR, so plenty of cheap ammo for plinking around. now my cheap ass needs to make a friend with land to shoot on, so I don't have to pay for range time.

There isn't anything wrong with tula for fucking around innawoods. Its accuracy isn't great, but it gets the job done and doesn't hurt the rifle at all
