Nice talk on cybernetic limb research

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Az608TI-NI

When civilian models are finally indistinguishable from the real deal (function wise) will development finally end up with something a soldier could use? Something that could make him superior to a normally limped person?

Or would this be seen as a waste of time?

Anon you're either a teenager or you're woefully retarded: the military has been trying to find ways to graft cybernetic enhancements into soldiers for decades. Military cybernetics isn't going to be the end result its probably going to fund most of the research.

Do you even understand what he is saying? Seems to me he's working on limbs that have no feeling or direct human control because they have a mind of their own. That's what all that impedance business is about.

'Cybernetic' limbs are shit and will be shit for some time. It's a hard problem to attach limbs to people.

You can strap em to people, but the connection won't be very good. You can bolt em' to bones, but then you have to have bolts going through skin. This can get infected. It will rip out if too much force(less that a regular limb can support) is applied because it's hard to get the load to transfer from metal to bone

>>29314921
At the current time it would take an almost infinite amount of money and unknown amount of time to make it

But less so. Prior to the wars replacement limbs were a hook hand and a peg leg with shocks.
Now we have arms with hands that have movable fingers and legs that adjust 1000's of times a second for a sure step.
Are they as good as the real thing? No! But we are getting closer. So yeah, they are mediocre, but far less so than just a few years ago.
>>
>>29319804
Hook hand is still superior. Legs are for the most part still peg legs with shocks
>>
>>29319455
>Bolts getting infected

Is this the dark ages? They would be under the skin, the only risk of infection would be from the surgery, just like any other surgery. Spot on about the rest though, robotic limbs are only as strong as what they're attached too. Even full Ghost in a Shell type cyborgs would be susceptible to concussions and the like.

Instead of relying purely on actuator, why not use it in tandem with electroactive polymers?

https://www.polymersolutions.com/blog/artificial-muscles-from-cheap-polymer-fibers/

The only problem is that it requires a lot of modeling since so many moving parts (thousands of fibers) would be involved to simulate muscle movement.

I'm sure the solution is much more complicated than what I am saying

>>29319818
Pic related, you need bolts going through the skin for limbs. Look up osteointegrated prosthesis
>>
>>29323732
he answered the question perfectly.

you move the nerves that would have gone into the limbs to a person's chest and attach them to bits of pectoral muscle. then when you think about moving a pissing limb piece. The relocated nerves fire causing tiny bits of pec muscle to twitch. electrodes are placed over your pec to sense the electrical currents of the muscle twitching. the sensors and computers map the patterns of muscle twitches. matching each twitch pattern to a limb movement thought. so "pattern A means make a fist and pattern b means point index finger", and so on.

It is even possible to send electrical signals in the other direction, to give a sense of touch. though from what I have read, it is a bit weird. It is like you are touching it with your hand, and your hand is on your chest.

>>29327690

You forget that the reason trench warfare became obsolete was because of the asymmetry of the modern battlefield (cities, towns, etc), the revival of guerrilla warfare (insurgencies being the most notable example of this) and the introduction of mobile, automatic weaponry. All those conflicts you mentioned include all of the following, nullifying the term "trench warfare". Why do you think that combatants in WWI had to drastically change it's strategies in the middle of the war? Not to mention that after that shit show was over, nobody ever dared to not invest in automatic small arms, even if they were mostly available in pistol calibers.

Can tell you right now, some of the shit out right now. the shit that is possible of just barely being as good as the real thing, is about 5-7 years out and that's thanks to four huge things, 3d metal laser sintering's patent expiring, the recent and massive explosion in renewable energy which has created a better mouse trap dilemma with battery technology, computer technology finally pushing the limits of what current chips are able to do with silicone creating a new demand for cheap graphine production methods which adds to the development of better, smaller and lighter electronics that prosthetics super fucking need as well as lighter and far stronger materials, and fourth, the recent interest in what I can only describe in what it'd be used as, synthetic muscle like material alternatives.

With laser sintering expiring, we're able to make complex geometries in metal, making the production of small parts being ungodly cheap and easy to manufacture en mass. This means joints, bird bone/honey comb like titanium support structures for a better weight/strength correlation.

Battery tech is obvious. But with things like Titanium oxide gel batteries that don't need an lithium anode that have more than 50% more power than lithium counterparts while being cheaper and lighter, you decrease the power draw and weight of the prosthetic, and give some room for engineers to work with as well as more power.

Graphine is huge because it allows for the production of better CPUs, cheaper CPUs, and graphine when combined with carbon nanotubes, is even stronger than straight CNT, which while stupidly expensive, may mean easier production of both, and when used in as a material, is super light and super strong, greatly increasing the life of the prosthetic.

And synthetic muscle is obvious. Super fucking cheap synthetic muscle that is super fucking strong, while being stupidly simple to make because all you need to do is copy organic forms.
