If anything, it's a pretty good deal for both America and Canada. The US can afford to spend trillions on it's military, while Canada is free to spend that money on whatever. America can police the world and enforce it's decisions, while Canada gets to enjoy the umbrella of protection and not complain about the choices the US makes.
