As a Texas Sherriff, I open carry on duty and off duty. I personally think its largely a non issue and carry permits should honestly be abolished. If someone open carries then I give them a high five and if I'm in plain clothes off duty and someone tries some shit, then I can just pull a "fear for my life" card and get off Scott free.
Open carrying a pistol is fine and normal seeming. Open carrying a long gun should be reserved for events, and even then you should err on the side of carrying the least threatening long arms you can.
