If Argentina were to take back the Falklands this week, how would the UK go about getting them back? As far as I see it; I think that without any carriers/harriers the brits would be pretty fucked.

We'd just send the Duke of Edinburgh to Buenos Aires on a 'diplomatic mission' and as soon as he stepped of the aeroplane he'd set about telling them how they're all a bunch of wogs and owning countries is for white people. They'd immediately see his great wisdom and write a letter of apology to his wife, sending it along with some nice South American flowers.

Either that or the islanders would just welcome the Argentinians with their local cuisine and hospitality; they'd feed them boot polish and re-enact the burning scene from The Wicker Man. Argentina would immediately fuck this shit and, understandably, give up on the whole idea.
>>
Unfortunately that "if" will never happen.

Argentina is weaker today militarily than it was 30 years ago. It has next to no powerful allies in the world (owes 'Murica shit tons of money and refuses to pay, shot and sunk a Chinese fishing boat etc) to recieve "humanitarian assistance" from, and is far too bankrupt to even consider buying or building new weapons.

Plus the British garrison on the island is much bigger now, with a full squadron of typhoons to fuck up any Argy shit that get close assuming it hasn't sunk by itself at that point.

Long story short, Argentina is effectively a non-country and the sabre-rattling is just to distract its population from domestic issues.

There are a couple different surprise attack scenarios in which argentina could easily get the islands back. the british garrison there is a joke.

I have no love for the limeys but even dreaming that Argies could defeat the Brits is quite fantastic.

Argentinians should be thankful they don't have to face them again. The UK forces would annihilate any opposition before noon just so they could enjoy their tea.

American here

Why do the brits care so much about a couple of shitty islands 4000 miles away from their own shitty island?

Not this shit again.
>>
>>29310747

Its completely plausible, as is the emergency landing scenario. both would completely overwhelm the garrison forces there.
>>
>>29310731
Because it was an attack on their territory, and all the population there are fully British at this point.
>>
>>29310731
>Why do the brits care so much about a couple of shitty islands 4000 miles away from their own shitty island?
Originally it was because it was a good staging area for research in British Antartica and the people on those Islands were British citizens, you never abandon your own people. Recently though Oil was discovered very close to the Islands which got Argentina beating their nationalist drum again.

What is suspicious about a cargo flight from south america to south africa? absolutely nothing. And you could easily pack 800 special forces troops in a cargo 747. out of the 1400 strong contingent the british have their, a tiny frachtion of those would be combat troops. and they would be woefully unprepared for that kind of surprise.

Let me count the ways, huh.

The Typhoon's escorting it could destroy it, either in the air or on the ground.

The fact that nobody will be allowed to exit the aircraft when it's landed.

The fact that the runway is miles away from the base facilities.

The fact that the Argentinian government owns no 747's in any of their commercial airlines.

The fact that the Argentinian Agrupación de Fuerzas de Operaciones Especiales can't field 800 men.

In your best, best case scenario your aircraft is destroyed on the ground by the RAF flight with outnumbered Argentinian soldiers trying to overrun the base in the sixteen hours it takes the UK rapid reaction forces to arrive.
>>
>>29310778
Like 60 percent of the settlers can trace their lineage back to Scots and Welsh who settled the island back in 1833. Another 30 are just straight up British.
>>
>>29310447
Firstly the argies could never take the islands with the current garrison. But playing devil's advocate let's say they managed to use their Nigger voodoo to magic their entire military onto the island.

Within hours tomahawks would be striking targets identified by British and five eyes satellites and sigint.

Within the first 48 hours there would be special forces on the island to begin observation and sabotage.

In the first week the RAF would rebase tornado, typhoon and supporting aircraft to ascension island. From there they will be flying to standoff distance to launch storm shadow. The 6k mile round trip is very doable for the RAF (they fly 4+ aircraft that distance at least twice a year for red flag. Obviously unarmed but it will be made to work.

This could continue until the UK ran out of targets.

A joint UK French fleet would be dispatched to mount an invasion (since 2010 the UK and France have had an asset sharing defence pact to cover each nations shortfall after the 2008 crash).

The lack of air cover would really be a non issue as the argies have no airforce especially considering AEW Merlin can be deployed from all royal navy frigates and destroyers. CAS for the landings would be provided by hms ocean / invincible operating apache.

I'm getting bored of fantasising but I'm sure you get the idea.

>A joint UK French fleet would be dispatched to mount an invasion (since 2010 the UK and France have had an asset sharing defence pact to cover each nations shortfall after the 2008 crash).

Since when was that a real thing? I thought it was a proposal that died when the UK decided to build two supercarriers rather than one.

>If Argentina were to take back the Falklands this week

Completely fucking impossible. The ONLY way that Argentina could take the Falklands is if the UK were hit by an asteroid, and it even then it would be a stretch.
>>
>>29311064
It was signed in 2010 and that's why British airlift was used to move French forces to mali. It's also why you regularly see type 45 escorting CDG and why French asw aircraft patrol around the Irish Sea.
>>
>>29310447
>If Argentina were to take back the Falklands this week, how would the UK go about getting them back?

Does the UK get to use magic as well, since apparently it's so prevalent in this situation?

Because if it comes down to that I imagine the UK has more powerful wizards
>>
>>29311107
But the UK does that with all allies.

I don't see anything saying the French would go to war with the UK, it all seems to be about joint development and joint training
>>

>If Argentina were to take back the Falklands this week

Almost impossible.

Actually, forget this:

Even if the UK were completely destroyed by an asteroid, the submarine force would still be active and that would be more than enough.

• jointly developing a Combined Joint Expeditionary Force (CJEF) as a non-standing bilateral capability able to carry out a range of operations in the future whether acting bilaterally or through NATO, the EU or other coalition arrangements - this concept will be developed over the coming years;
• building primarily on maritime task group co-operation around the French carrier Charles de Gaulle - the UK and France will aim to have, by the early 2020s, the ability to deploy a UK-French integrated carrier strike group incorporating assets owned by both countries;

Meh, I'm bored and need something to do during a cuppa, I'll bite.
So basically, what you're saying is that in this day and age a plane can just randomly divert with no asking questions?
Once you've ripped all the seats out to transport these 'special forces' where are you going to put there gear? How are you going to keep them supplied?
How is them overwhelming the garrison (if it were even plausible) going to stop the British coming back and curbstomping them again?

Most importantly, the Argentinian military doesn't even have any 747'S, they'd have use a civilian one, which raises all sorts of questions about its use in a military aspect.

I really, really hope you're just trolling, since if you are, well done, if not, stop posting and seek medical attention.

One of the biggest problems with us using ramps on the carriers is that British and French carriers won't be able to launch each other's jets

>>29310878

holy fuck you are delusional. Do you not realize there are international rules to follow for aircraft in distress? Let me tell you how something like this would go down.

>747 cargo flight from somewhere to argentina to capetown
>route takes it 20 nm from falklands
>at its closest point, aircraft declares and emergency and notifies mt pleasant that its coming in for a landing
>airport staff in falklands HAVE to allow it
>aircraft staff, not suspecting anything but a routine emergency landing send out firetrucks and a few police/garrison members
>the "emergency" was loss of main onboard power, so aircraft interior is completely blacked out
>once aircraft stops all of the emergency slides deploy at once
>over 800 argie special forces come out guns blazing
>garrison destroyed
>more cargo aircraft arrive bringing reinforcements
>game over
>>
>>29310447
I read a novel on this premise once. Basically since the brits retired all their carrier capable planes to save money, their fleet has no air cover. The argies buy shitloads of french hardware which fucks up the landing force because their SAMs were facing the wrong way and a russian sub secretly sinks the british carrier, making it look like an air strike did it.

The novel then follows a stranded SAS team that has to get rescued by US Navy seals. The US navy seals also sink the argie fleet in harbour and destroy most of their air force on the ground. This forces the argies to sue for peace with the brits and share the oil in the falklands.

>So basically, what you're saying is that in this day and age a plane can just randomly divert with no asking questions?

yes, there would be no time to react. you either tell the US registered (its a leased cargo plane) to land in the ocean, and create a diplomatic disaster because the flight plans say the plane is carrying endangered penguins etc. to a zoo in capetown.

The special forces would carry all the gear they would need on their back- they'd have the garrison finished off within an hour or two and reinforcements could immediately be on their way.

Once the argies fortify the island with 50,000 men the UK wouldn't be able to get it back because they have no harriers providing air support.

Against forces that know the terrain much better, are entrenched and have plans for exactly this sort of thing?
>>
>>29311847
>assuming they don't land in the british fucking base

thats exactly where they'd land though.

there is also a scenario involving a modified cargo tanker crashing into the beach and deploying 30,000 men along with tanks and vehicles as well, but the plane scenario would be easier to pull off for argentina.

Yeah, most US speed limits (at least as far as the maximum speed is concerned) are better than the UK's at least.
Then again, the maximum speed limit in the UK is 70, but it might as well be 80 since eveyone does it and the police don't really bother unless you're doing 90+ (on the motorway obviously.

>>

well if you did the initial attack by lying the US government and using one of their planes (747) to do it, you can bet your ass the US is going to get involved.

The RN can pretty easily cut off the Falklands with just their surface and submarine assets. Argentina has nothing flying that can make it past a guided missile destroyer.

Countries makes preparations and plans for every possible scenario regardless of how likely it is or not.
Recently some documents were declassified regarding a Zombie Preparedness Initiative which was launched by the CDC a few years ago http://www.cdc.gov/phpr/zombies.htm
and here's some of the documents http://www.theblackvault.com/documentarchive/counter-zombie-dominance-conplan-8888/
It's an utterly absurd scenario yet there's people who prepare for it and I think it's a bit more likely that Argentina will make a successful attack on Falklands than a zombie apocalypse breaking out.

City of trojan about 4000 years ago. another country built a massive toy horse out of wood and stuffed it full of special operators. the trojans brought it into the walls of their city thinking it would be a cool statue. when the trojans went to sleep the operators emerged from the horse and took over the place.

there are countless other examples of surprise attacks using unconventional means.

OK, you caught my first mistake. You're right, it would be a mistake to use an American plane. They could just as easily lease ones from the canadians though, and they wouldn't do shit with trudeau.
>>
>>29312301
So you're going to steal a 747, rip out all of the seats so no one can sit down (fatigue+inevitable injuries due to turbulance/take-off/landing) and fly it for hours, again whilst everyone is just standing up and expect them to do anything meaningful at the end of it? With just their personal weapons? Against an adversary with combat capable aircraft?
Pull the other one, its got bells on.

The US wouldn't go as far as to "Chew off it's own arm", but it would help in whatever way possible that doesn't involve actually killing Argentinians directly.

AWACS, logistics, satellite surveillance, and airborne refueling are all within reason. Americans putting a CBG in the area and declaring a "no-argies zone" is not.

So are you seriously suggesting that if the Argentinians landed troops, the RN cut it off and then the Argentinians refused the British access to their own citizens for food, that that would go down at all well on the international stage?
The second the Argentinians started using civilian hostages, they're fucked.

Oh and you do realise that a) the Falkland islanders have plenty of food stocks, they won't run out immediately and b) the Argentinans would surrender not necassarily due to lack of food but due to a lack of any, and I mean ANY, chance of re-inforcements or support?

I am curious, how quickly do you think you can actually disembark that many troops from a cargo ship?
>>
>>29310731
Thatcher was like the Donald Trump of her day, and she and her electorate wanted to "make Britain great again" after they had lost nearly 80% of the Empire's territory in the years preceding the 1980s.

The Falklands was basically a line in the sand to prove that the Brits were still globally relevant and that they can project their force around the world.
>>
>>29312692

The entire from of the ship will be a ramp that lowers and also there would be a couple of ramps on the side of the ship, so it'd take a couple of minutes to get everyone off, and a further 10 minutes for all the vehicles/tanks to disembark.
>>
>>29311993

See, this is the flaw in your theory and also why you'd be a bad writer, since your protagonists can't win on their own merit, it requires ineptitude on behalf of the antagonists which makes a boring story and a failed military operation.

>"special forces" grow, suddenly disappear, the only 747 in Argentina takes off with a flight plan near the Falklands
>747 calls mayday next to the islands, lands to attempt the most fucking obvious trojan horse in history

I've been to the Falklands, and can hand on heart say it's the most boring place in the universe - worse than a friday night in Tidworth, there's nothing there worth fighting for. Well they did have problems with Argentinian aircraft at one point as some ships were located between two valleys, the Argentinian aircraft would stay low, pop over the top briefly, drop their load, then get back to hugging the earth on the over side.
British basically ended up bolting any and every MG they had to the railings etc on the sides of the ships and just put a curtain of lead up in the path of the Argeninians since they couldn't engage them with missiles.

>CdG is both quite big and has arresting wires. F-35B can probably go for a conventional landing rather than vertical, and thus avoid the deck problem.
On the QEs they're going to use rolling landings anyway, not vertical.

Actually I can vouch for the machine guns on the railings, I know a guy who was there. He claims his unit was credited with a kill

So out of hypothetical interest, assume two obviously military aircraft are flying in a way that the nearest alternate airport is the falklands (for fun, let's assume South Africa > Argentina, and 2 C-5s given to argentina by the white association for being very white.)

If the two declare an emergency (claiming they flew into one another, when dealing with argentinian military not implausible.) are the british obligated to let them land as aircraft in distress (claiming only to have cargo, no troops)? or as they're military can they go "sorry m8s, best of luck making it back to argentina!"

Rangeban all Argentinians please japmoot

The UK would probably have US backup anyway.

Do Argentinians really still care about the Falklands?
Outside of 4chan the only person I've ever seen arguing about LAS MALVINAS has been myself (Brit) trying to bait the more obnoxious RULE BRITANNIA types into looking silly.

Yes, they care a lot.

It's used as a sort of political rally cry for Argies.
Here in the US, you just start shouting 9/11 if you don't actually have anything to talk about politically; same in Argentina but with the Falklands.

Ever wonder what a few machine guns could do to 800 completely exposed and crowded men on flat ground with two minutes to do it in?
>>
>>29313333
The argies would simply only use troops shorter than 1.2m tall
