What's your opinion of the German Sd.Kfz 250/251 halftracks of WW2?
>>
>>29307082
probably the best troop transport of the war because of its off road abilities and its small arms resistance which allowed troops to fight while mounted
>>
>>29307082
wheels and tracks is kinda dumb

why satan trips
>>
>>29307082
I think I could build 20 jeeps with the same resources.
>>
>>29307723
From what I've read on them today, they really seemed to have a lot of trouble building enough of them for their original intended purpose (transporting panzergrenadiers). I'm trying to find a comparison of how much more expensive they were compared to an Opel Blitz right now.
>>
>>29307082
the czechs kept building them after ww2 so they can't have been so bad

Except U.S. halftracks had more powerful and reliable engines, simpler and more reliable suspension, a powered front axel and they didn't shed their tracks (and a PTO winch on some models).

In an all track vehicle, a significant amount of weight and interior volume is taken up by the transmission, since you need to be able to supply different amounts of power to the tracks across a whole range of speeds forwards and backwards in order to steer the thing.

In a half track, you can get the same low ground pressure of a track for going innamud, while greatly simplifying construction by just using wheels to steer.

Should honestly make a comeback imotbhfam (in my opinion to be honest family).

m2m3: less speed, less range, the powered front axel just made it less maneuverable. as far as shedding tacks, neither did the 250/251.
>>
>>29309333
oh and the 250/251 could actually stand up to a burst of machinegun fire at 100m. while the m2/m3 would just breakdown.

Grossly overcomplex.
You had steering brakes for the tracks, service brakes for the vehicle, and the front "steering" wheels were all but ineffective in soft conditions (explaining the separate track steering brakes).

The interleaved roadwheels makes maintenance or repair on all but the outermost wheels a chore, it uses a close pitch track that is heavy and maintenance intensive, and the thing has a preselective transmission.

Lastly, from first-hand experience-

The driver's position was designed by a masochist, who likely moonlighted as a chiropractor.

For an example of a mechanically sound half-track, you need to look at the U.S examples. Much simpler, powered front axle, rubber-band track.

The sole redeeming feature of the '250 was the armor geometry, and that made the thing slow to manufacture.

M8, you're critiquing the 250/251 from a perspective of a drunk truck driver who carries large loads of fresh dildos from a factory. I think OP meant the best halftrack in terms of tactics? any battle applications? Shit, I don't know.
>>
>>29307082
>its off road abilities

US halftracks had better off road mobility, as the front wheels on German halftracks were not powered and US haltracks were. The german had better armor sloping though.

It is true, but protecting and transporting panzergrenadiers was the whole point. Jeeps have no protection.

Tbh the body of Land rovers was all Aluminium, 2 people can physically drag the chassis sideways so with all that un-sprung weight it might be stable

People that are used to 40+ year old track designs compare them to modern wheeled designs.
Then they decide that wheels are "superior", when all they've been doing is driving along roads dodging IED's for a decade.
