In my town their were equestrian units during the carnaval but due to pussy rules of engagement for them they basically couldn't do anything against bastards who would hide in the crowd and cuts the horses' side with razors. Until one day they got one of the guy because they couldn't take it anymore, let the horse trample him (and trust me police horses are fucking death machines made from muscle, hate and anger for every bipedal life form) then they beat him almost to death in a corner, took him in custody and beat him more. Most counter terrorism police go on normal patrols or have specially outfitted "normal" cars with all of their gear in the back.
When they hear a call they pull over to a safe location, arm up, and drive to the incident. A lot of the time they're not exactly on duty and thus don't have normal police shoes/pants/shirts/etc.

Belgian here.
There's so much difference because they are (in some cases "were") different units.
The SIE (the elite fuckers in grey) tend to go for SCAR as carbine, G3 shorty as DMR, P90 as PDW, FN303 as less lethal and Glocks. The SIE is however split into observation units, reaction units and territorial units. They kinda get to pick whatever they want, but the squads that work together tend to try and sync their gear.

The "Federal" police have M&P pistols and a variety of carbines and SMGs. The Federal police is a merger of the normal police and the Rijkswacht (Gendarmerie). The Rijkswacht was indirectly part of the military, so they had anything up to full auto FALs. The normal police tended to have stuff like UZIs and MP5s.
The "Judicial" police and Customs often carry 9x19mm AUG carbines.
The "Local" police favors Glocks, Sig Sauer, etc and tend to have UZIs, MP5s, etc.
The UZIs in question are Belgian made and not Israeli, by the way. They were made under license at Herstal.
It's rather rare for the police to actually use carbines and SMGs. So they don't tend to renew their stocks. Only the SIE and the response teams of local police in large cities tend to extensively use them. The rest get them from their armories when there's a terror alert or something. That rarely happens and even then they tend to get issued one per 2- or 3-man patrol. The rest just uses their pistols.

The SIE is kinda interesting. They were originally Brigade Diane. They have an illustrious history, which includes pissing off the mob so hard that each member had a price of 1.000.000 belgian franks on his head (25000 euro). As a result their identity was/is kept secret. Generally their wives might know, but it's rare to go past that.
Diane also trained with SFOD-D and SAS, which is funny considering they're cops. But this was possible since they were Rijkswacht (Gendarmerie) at the time, which is military.
SIE (special intervention squadron in english) is their new home at the Federal police, after the Rijkswacht was abolished as a standalone entity & merged into the normal police.

I've shot one, sure.
It's not special, really. It's just a decent assault rifle for its time. Outdated now due to not being more modular.
FNC Sporters are not that easy to find anymore here either, and they tend to be quite costly.
It's not really significantly better than a Galil and is on par with an Rk92/Rk95.
But newer rifles tend to blow it out of the water since stuff like the SCAR has drop in triggers that outshine it.
A good AR15 will serve you better as a range rifle than an FNC Sporter. But I understand the attraction.

Belgian Jigsaw is an old & outdated design. It replaced a camo that looked a bit Rhodesian.
Initially, the air force was also going to go with a flecktarn style, but due to it bringing back "bad memories" in the population, they scratched that idea.
Belgian jigsaw contains small amounts of black & white, which is now very uncommon in woodland style camo. In current manufacture, the white bits have been removed.
It works fairly well in belgian woodland. (and also incidentally in the DRCongo)
