so i just got an AR and im trying to change out the barrel to a longer 20" one. The existing gas tube doesnt match up to the new longer barrel, isn't long enough
Just wanted to make sure before I order one- I need a longer gas tube right?

an AR-15 receiver just isn't big enough for 7.62x51mm. might get 7.62x39mm to work

Rifle length buffer, upper block, barrel wrench, lithium greese, front sight taper pins, gas tube roll pin, torque wrench, and rifle length hand guard.

you dont need a new buffer unless you swap what youve got on there now for a a2 rifle tube
you dont need to to that a 20 inch barrel will work perfectly fine with a carbine stock.
you do need the upper block if you want to remove the old barrel then install your new barrel.
you could halfass jury rig it but you run the risk of crushing the upper or breaking it when you try to tighten the barrel

You should only need to do 2 things (easiest way): 1. replace the gas block with a low profile one, get a rifle-length gas tube with it (Geissele makes good ones.) 2. replace your handguard with a free-floating one (again Geissele makes a good one, the Super Modular Rail).
You will want to get a rail whose length is longer than the gas tube/system: Rifle = 12", Mid = 9", Carbine = 7", Pistol = 5".
Most rails of this type require and come with a custom barrel nut, the installation of which is the only hard part of the entire operation.

I guess I thought buying this tool would automatically stretch the rifle into whatever dimensions I pleased like a magic wand.

Of course. Make sure you keep the barrel pointing at your cat/dog during the entire install as well.
