Ethanol cannot be distilled purer than ~95%, unless you as a chemical to the water to lower it's evaporation point. Typically benzene is used (in industrial applications). This also makes the alcohol undrinkable, since benzene poisoning ain't nothing to fuck with.

Biodiesel is pretty shit offgrid, but wood gas is actually decent both for electric cogeneration and transportation. A light dedicated 4WD can do pretty well.
Anyone got any experience with the Suzuki side kick? I wanna get it cause from what I've read it's really good at off roading for its type of model and it's also fairly compact (live in a city). But only worry i have because i don't know anyone whose owned one before is the lifespan and the gas mileage.

Volkswagen/Bombardier Iltis. Very basic vehicle, but fun as hell to drive for some reason. Will run you from $5-16k, depending on the condition, $16k-ish being showroom. We even threw TOW on them at one time. They're noted for their ability to go literally anywhere, even being capable of being sealed up and floated, so long as you don't try and rock crawl with it.

The leather seats are nice too.

I've had to put a new motor in it, and the 4WD is broken in it, I suspect something with the vacuum lines. It's also in desperate need of a realignment, which isn't too bad, as well as a ton of body work (new windshield, new fender, fiberglass work on the bed, and a new paint job because my passenger door is white on my blue truck)

I drove one of those (bv206) for a year, and it's not comfortable, it does 40kph max and its noisy.
It floats, and it's great on snow though.
Unless you live in a swamp or in Alaska i really don't see a use for it.

I have both camping gear and have slept in a lean to shelter before, that's not a problem. But for SHTF I assume most of us will be outdoors if we are on the move. I work outdoors and we have cars with us that we can get into when we take a break. It's so useful to just get into a car, turn on the heat if it's cold, or just dodge the rain for a while as you take a break. And you don't have to pitch a tent everytime you want to get out of the rain.
