My PMR-30 has 1000 rounds in reserve and I see it intermittently at my LGS, but I've moved to 9mm for plinking.

Because it's a bad round with shit ballistics, poor terminal performance, and it's absolutely filthy.
Stores are having a hard time ordering it in.
Or of a long barrel it will zip through light body armor, about as well as 5.7 does our of the handgun.
It's light and small but unlike 22lr has enough power to take medium/small game.
It's a great SHTF survival gun if you're into that kind of thing.

Maybe a top end rimfire round would equal 5.7 with a barrel difference if it was .25 only necked down to .22.
Maybe it would have similar AP capability with spitzer points like .17HMR seems able to take.

I wouldn't count on it. They make some revolvers in 22lr&wmr, and I'm guessing rifles too, but ones wmeant for 22lr would for starters usually just not fit.

22mag is a hair thicker its also longer it wont physically fit in a 22lr chamber
firing 22 lr out of a 22mag results in splitcasings the gun will probably jam up and accuracy will be horrible
